Check adapter boards to verify that all jumpers and switchesare set correctly. Refer to the Hardware Service chapter for settingsand instructions on disassembly for access to the storage devices,Motherboards, and boards that plug into the Motherboard. Whenreinserting adapters, be sure that they are fully seated in their slots.5. Verify that the Tree Card is fully seated in the main processorboard connector.Crisis Situation and Crisis RecoveryWhen the system is first powered on, the BIOS executes its boot blockcode. This code is stored in a permanent (not erasable or updateable)portion of the System BIOS ROM. Its function is to validate the rest ofthe System BIOS ROM, which can be updated using the BIOS UpdateUtility (flash.exe). If it finds that the System BIOS is corrupted, it willinvoke a "crisis recovery."A crisis recovery is indicated by a continuous series of three beeps,with the diskette drive light on. No video will be present during a crisisrecovery.A special diskette is required to perform the crisis recovery and updatethe corrupted System BIOS. A crisis situation is very rare, and can onlyoccur if problems occur (such as a power interruption) when theSystem BIOS is being updated. Refer to the Utilities appendix for BIOSupdate procedures.Note: For the Series 4000 processor board, an alternative crisisrecovery method is available. Refer to the <strong>7453</strong> Workstation User's Guidefor additional information.
Chapter 3: Troubleshooting 3-13Service TipsPower the Unit DownThis section provides a collection of servicing tips.Since some units have a UPS power supply, merely unplugging theunit may not cause the unit to shut down. For units with UPS batteries,first turn off the unit by pressing the power button. If the unit does notshutdown, place the key switch on the retail keyboard or LCD displayto the "S" position and press the power button again.Powering Up After Replacing a BoardIf you are installing a workstation after replacing a board with a serviceboard, it is recommended that you update the ROM BIOS for the newboard. Otherwise, you may encounter poor display results. Refer to the<strong>7453</strong> Workstation User's Guide for update procedures.Error and Information MessagesWhen the BIOS encounters an error that requires the user to make acorrection, the following occurs:• A beep code sounds or a message is displayed on the screen• The message Press F2 To Enter Setup is displayed.
