4-50 Chapter 4: Hardware Service8-Port RS-232 BoardGeneralThe 8-Port RS-232 Board provides eight RS-232 ports. The boardoccupies an ISA slot and requires one IRQ and 64 bytes of contiguousI/O address space. The board can operate in either a DOS or aWindows 95, Windows 98, or NT environment. The board uses an 8-port RS-232 cable to connect to peripheral devices. In a DOS environment, the Serial Device Driver (Serialdd) is used todrive the 8-Port Board. Serialdd is an installable driver used to runRS-232 peripheral devices. Please note that the Serialdd is limited tohandling a maximum of eight RS-232 serial ports. So, if the mainprocessor board has two serial ports and the 8-Port Board has eight, out of ten possible serial ports only eight can be used. Which eightports is specified in the command line for the 8-Port Board in theconfig.sys file. See Chapter 6 in the 74xx Retail POS Workstation SoftwareUser's Guide for more information about the Serialdd and configuringthe board. In a Windows 95, Windows 98, or NT environment, the MicrosoftSerial Driver is used to drive the board. The Microsoft Serial Driver isalready loaded on the system. A distinction between the MicrosoftSerial Driver and the Serialdd is that the Microsoft Serial Driver is notlimited to handling a maximum of eight ports.Note: Support for one type of serial port board is provided. The DualPort RS-232 Board and the 8-Port RS-232 Board cannot be in theunit at the same time; they are mutually exclusive. The rest of this section provides installation and set-up instructions forthe 8-Port RS-232 Board in DOS and Windows environments. Theinstallation procedure includes, in order:1. Description and location of the switches and jumpers on the 8-PortRS-232 Board. Default I/O Address and Interrupt Settings. Somesettings are specific for 586 or 686 systems.2. Hardware installation instructions including information about theproper switch and jumper settings.
