been consecrated, <strong>the</strong>reby proclaim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Lord’s death (SD VII, 84).<br />

Any o<strong>the</strong>r use made <strong>of</strong> a sacrament than <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>ely mandated one<br />

is a perversion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nihil rule derived from <strong>the</strong> Scripture. Besides<br />

<strong>the</strong> misuse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Supper</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Corpus Christi festivals, <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholics have misused what <strong>the</strong>y call baptism by baptiz<strong>in</strong>g bells, us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it for cur<strong>in</strong>g leprosy, etc. It is clear that <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>of</strong> Christ<br />

prescribes that persons be baptized for <strong>the</strong> forgiveness <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>s, life and<br />

salvation.<br />

340 In clos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> explanation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nihil rule, <strong>the</strong> Solid<br />

Declaration <strong>in</strong>forms us that to avoid abuses this rule had been set<br />

up at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, and it has been expla<strong>in</strong>ed by Lu<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> material<br />

found <strong>in</strong> Jena IV 75 (SD VII, 87). <strong>The</strong> reference must be to <strong>the</strong><br />

Wolfer<strong>in</strong>us correspondence, which consists <strong>of</strong> two letters written by<br />

Lu<strong>the</strong>r to Simon Wolfer<strong>in</strong>us, pastor at Eisleben, on July 4 and July<br />

20, 1543. 76 Here is an example <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r employ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> axiom which is<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g clarified, namely, that noth<strong>in</strong>g has <strong>the</strong> character <strong>of</strong> a sacrament<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> sacramental action.<br />

341 <strong>The</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al Dresden edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Concord, after <strong>the</strong><br />

reference to Lu<strong>the</strong>r, has <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> text, “Tom IV, Jena,” but <strong>the</strong> page or<br />

folio number is miss<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> new Tappert version has, unfortunately,<br />

dropped from <strong>the</strong> text itself <strong>the</strong> reference to Volume IV <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jena<br />

Edition. Tappert, however, has added as a footnote (#4) <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reference to SD 87, “WA 30 II : 254, 255; cf. Smalcald Articles, pt III,<br />

art 15, 4.” This note comes verbatim from <strong>the</strong> footnote 4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Goett<strong>in</strong>gen<br />

Edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Concord, Die Bekenntnisschriften der<br />

Evangelisch-Lu<strong>the</strong>rischen Kirche, 5th ed., 1963, p. 1001. <strong>The</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r reference<br />

<strong>the</strong>re given is to Lu<strong>the</strong>r’s “Exhortation to all Clergy Assembled<br />

at Augsburg, 1530” (LW 34, 9–61). But <strong>the</strong>re are problems with this<br />

identification that make it impossible to accept it. Lu<strong>the</strong>r’s “Exhortation”<br />

is not found <strong>in</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> German or Lat<strong>in</strong> Volume IV <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Jena Edition but ra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Volume V <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German Jena Edition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> explicit page numbers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bekenntnis and Tappert editions<br />

refer to Lu<strong>the</strong>r’s condemnation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman abuse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

<strong>of</strong> baptism, such as baptiz<strong>in</strong>g bells, altars, pictures, etc., and its <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> superstitious regulations, as for example, that only men<br />

(no women) could wash <strong>the</strong> corporals used <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong><br />

Eucharist, etc. <strong>The</strong> Smalcald reference is to Lu<strong>the</strong>r’s afterthought at<br />

<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> articles, stat<strong>in</strong>g that he does not wish to have anyth<strong>in</strong>g
