no new arguments s<strong>in</strong>ce his death. We shall, <strong>the</strong>refore, for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong><br />

desirable brevity, merely refer <strong>the</strong> Christian reader to <strong>the</strong>se writ<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

desire to have <strong>the</strong>m considered as appealed to herewith.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> enumerated writ<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r one f<strong>in</strong>ds none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aristotelian<br />

Formula is not only warn<strong>in</strong>g us aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> Aristotelian term<strong>in</strong>ology,<br />

but emphatically tell<strong>in</strong>g us to stick closely to Lu<strong>the</strong>r’s more<br />

62 Planck describes how after <strong>the</strong> March meet<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> Elector, no<br />

doubt on <strong>the</strong> advice <strong>of</strong> Andreae and <strong>Chemnitz</strong>, called <strong>in</strong> Chytraeus<br />

from Rostock and Musculus and Koerner from Frankfurt-on-<strong>the</strong>-<br />

Oder to be along for <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al revision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> document. This took<br />

place at <strong>the</strong> Bergen Abbey, May 19–28. Planck also reports, with appropriate<br />

documentation, that Chytraeus was quite unhappy with <strong>the</strong><br />

revisions that had been made. 11 Montgomery takes note <strong>of</strong> Chytraeus’<br />

<strong>of</strong>fended feel<strong>in</strong>gs at <strong>the</strong> fact that so much <strong>of</strong> his material was cut out.<br />

But he agrees with Fritschel that Chytraeus “was exaggerat<strong>in</strong>g.” 12<br />

63 But if Chytraeus was <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2,000 words here excised, and<br />

his heart was set on <strong>the</strong> Aristotelian method <strong>of</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e<br />

he was so disaffected. At any rate, <strong>the</strong> Formula <strong>of</strong> Concord here avoided<br />

<strong>the</strong> Aristotelian method which seems to make <strong>the</strong> actual presence<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body and blood <strong>of</strong> Christ cont<strong>in</strong>gent on <strong>the</strong> oral reception. It<br />

would seem that it is impermissible for later generations to <strong>in</strong>troduce<br />

this type <strong>of</strong> reason<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Formula <strong>of</strong> Concord on <strong>the</strong> Lord’s<br />

<strong>The</strong> sacraments are mysteries that are unknown to human reason and<br />

hidden from our sense perceptions. <strong>The</strong>y are made manifest and revealed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Word alone. <strong>The</strong>refore we must come to a proper understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and correct judgment on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> words by which <strong>the</strong> sacraments<br />

are revealed and given to us. Moreover, each <strong>in</strong>dividual sacrament has its<br />

own proper and peculiar word and def<strong>in</strong>ition, which <strong>in</strong> a sense is its form<br />

(LS 87 f.).<br />
