Chapter vII<br />

summary and conclusions<br />

406 As has been noted (p. 88; note #61), very few references to <strong>Chemnitz</strong>’s<br />

doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord’s <strong>Supper</strong> are made <strong>in</strong> present day standard<br />

texts on dogmatics. In quite strik<strong>in</strong>g contrast, references to <strong>the</strong> seventeenth<br />

century Lu<strong>the</strong>ran dogmaticians are ra<strong>the</strong>r full and quite<br />

detailed. 88 This omission is all <strong>the</strong> more strik<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Chemnitz</strong> is<br />

called <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologians, <strong>the</strong> second Mart<strong>in</strong>, who after Lu<strong>the</strong>r<br />

is <strong>the</strong> most important <strong>the</strong>ologian <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran<br />

Church and is regarded as <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g spirit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Formula<br />

<strong>of</strong> Concord. Despite two books that deal particularly with <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord’s <strong>Supper</strong> (Examen II and <strong>The</strong> Lord’s <strong>Supper</strong>), he is <strong>the</strong> forgotten<br />

<strong>the</strong>ologian with <strong>the</strong>se later <strong>the</strong>ologians as far as <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lord’s <strong>Supper</strong> is concerned. It appears, however, that this situation<br />

will be remedied <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near future s<strong>in</strong>ce he will soon be <strong>the</strong> most<br />

studied <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran <strong>the</strong>ologians, at least where <strong>the</strong> English language<br />

is employed. At <strong>the</strong> present time <strong>the</strong>re are about 2500 pages <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Chemnitz</strong> rendered <strong>in</strong>to English, and President J. A. O. Preus is well<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> monumental task <strong>of</strong> translat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Loci <strong>The</strong>ologici.<br />

407 <strong>Chemnitz</strong> is a sixteenth century <strong>the</strong>ologian and not a seventeenth<br />

century. He was much closer to <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al roots <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation<br />

than were <strong>the</strong> later dogmaticians. He is also <strong>the</strong> chief author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Formula <strong>of</strong> Concord. Hence <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chemnitz</strong> may well serve as<br />

a healthy corrective aga<strong>in</strong>st some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological weaknesses found<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century dogmaticians. Wal<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> more ways than<br />

one, made it clear that he was not irrevocably bound to what <strong>the</strong> seventeenth<br />

century <strong>the</strong>ologians formulated. In 1875 he wrote,<br />

<strong>The</strong>y do not know us who label our <strong>the</strong>ology that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventeenth<br />

century. As highly as we treasure <strong>the</strong> immense accomplishments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

great Lu<strong>the</strong>ran dogmaticians <strong>of</strong> that period, it is never<strong>the</strong>less not really
