PAH emission factors were found to vary greatly with a maximumtotal PAH emission factor of 452 mg/kg wood burned under one set of operating conditions. Wood type andburner operating condition were found to have a significant effect on the concentration of particle-boundPAHs released in wood smoke. Analysis of individual particle composition by SEM-EDS confirmed highcarbon content in wood combustion emissions with operating condition and wood type playing significantroles in particle distribution and morphology. Thepurpose of this study is to estimate the impact of the interannual variability in precipitations on theinterannual variability in emission and deposition of nitrogen compounds. The interannual variability ofrains between 2002 and 2007 is responsible for changes in emission (both anthropogenic and biogenic) anddeposition fluxes, due to changes in soil moisture and temperature, LAI, and turbulence, and also occurrenceof fires, linked to meteorological conditions. Dry and wet deposition fluxes are calculated from gasmeasurements of NO2, HNO3 and NH3 concentrations (from passive samplers), and from nitrate andammonium concentrations in rain. Deposition velocities are simulated with the surface model ISBA. Organicnitrogen species are not taken into account.Emission fluxes are evaluated including NO biogenic emissionfrom soils (simulated with ISBA), emissions of NOx and NH3 from domestic and biomass fires (calculatedfrom satellite data), and volatilization of NH3 from animal excreta (statistical data). Meteorologicalconditions are provided by the forcing developed in ALMIP (AMMA Land surface Model IntercomparisonProject). Long range transport of products from fires occurring in the southern hemisphere is alsoquantified.In dry savanna ecosystems, emission and deposition fluxes increase at the beginning of the rainyseason because of large emissions of biogenic NO (pulse events), and emission of NH3 is dominated by theprocess of volatilization from animal excreta. Biomass burning emissions are more important in wet savannaand forest sites.
