<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>St</strong>udents’ Guild<br />
<strong>St</strong>udent activities at <strong>St</strong>. Augustine are organised and controlled by <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>udents’ Guild. <strong>The</strong>re are academic<br />
as well as artistic, cultural and religious societies catering to <strong>the</strong> special needs <strong>of</strong> students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> provides formally for <strong>the</strong> participation <strong>of</strong> its student body in its governance. <strong>St</strong>udents,<br />
through <strong>the</strong> Guild, elect representatives on all <strong>the</strong> main decision-making committees <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
including its planning, finance and academic committees. <strong>The</strong> <strong>St</strong>udents’ Guild also plans various activities<br />
for students, for example, Inter-Faculty Games (which is a forerunner to <strong>the</strong> Inter-Campus Games), a<br />
Calypso Competition, Annual Fete, Caribbean Week, various Faculty Weeks and Orientation Week. As part<br />
<strong>of</strong> its outreach programme, <strong>the</strong> Guild also hosts a Tutor Programme, where <strong>University</strong> students provide<br />
assistance to secondary school students.<br />

aSSoCiaTion (PGa)<br />
Once you have registered for a <strong>postgraduate</strong><br />
programme you are given automatic membership<br />
in <strong>the</strong> PGA. <strong>The</strong> PGA was established in 1996 to<br />
serve <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> graduate students. <strong>The</strong> PGA<br />
represents graduate students as a voice in student<br />
affairs through <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>udents’ Guild, at <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />
Board and at <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies & Research.<br />
Any problems experienced by <strong>postgraduate</strong><br />
students are raised at <strong>the</strong>se meetings.<br />
aims <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PGa:<br />
• To promote a spirit <strong>of</strong> solidarity among <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>postgraduate</strong> students <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
• To promote an environment well-suited to <strong>the</strong><br />
activities <strong>of</strong> learning, investigation, research<br />
and development <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>, through<br />
an attitude <strong>of</strong> mutual understanding and<br />
cooperation with <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> authorities,<br />
its instruments and o<strong>the</strong>r student bodies and<br />
organisations.<br />
• To promote awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Association as a channel <strong>of</strong> communication<br />
through which <strong>the</strong> resources <strong>of</strong> <strong>postgraduate</strong><br />
students can be taken advantage <strong>of</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />
region at large.<br />
• To provide members with real benefits in terms<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association’s influence, prestige and<br />
legitimacy as <strong>the</strong> body that acts as a voice<br />
on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>postgraduate</strong> students, before<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> authorities.<br />
• To disseminate news <strong>of</strong> occurrences affecting<br />
all <strong>postgraduate</strong> students and to give advice<br />
to members collectively and individually on<br />
matters concerning <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />
• To create an avenue for possible exchange <strong>of</strong><br />
ideas and interaction among <strong>postgraduate</strong>s<br />
on all campuses.<br />
