The PG Diploma Project Reports should not exceed 100 pages including Appendices. Postgraduate Diplomas are offered in: Coastal Zone Processes The objective of this programme is to equip the graduate with the necessary knowledge of coastal processes and techniques required for coastal zone management and monitoring of coastal zone plans and projects. Admission to this programme requires that applicants have a first degree from an approved university in the Natural Sciences, Planning, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Surveying, Land Information and at least one year of related postgraduate experience or an accredited BTech or HND/Associate degree in Civil Engineering plus five (5) years related postgraduate experience. Construction engineering and management Construction management The primary objective of the programme is to improve the decision-making capabilities of engineers and other construction professionals in the region, with a view to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the whole construction process. The programme should also equip engineers and construction professionals to apply modern knowledge effectively in the real, competitive world of industry. The programme is also directed towards fostering the advancement of knowledge through the promotion of research into the problems and opportunities that face the construction sector. Entry into this programme requires that candidates have at least a first degree or equivalent in Civil, Structural, Construction, Building or Architectural Engineering, a first degree or equivalent qualification in Architecture or Quantity Surveying, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to The University. T h e f a C u l T Y o f Engineering electrical & Computer engineering The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a major in Communication Systems; Computer Systems Engineering; Control Systems; Electronic Systems or Energy Systems. The Diploma is offered full-time as well as part-time, through on-campus face to face delivery. Part-time students are normally expected to fulfill the Diploma requirements in four semesters while full-time students are normally expected to fulfill the Diploma requirements in two semesters. The minimum entry requirements for this PG Diploma normally include a B.Sc. (Hons) in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Natural Sciences (majoring in Electronics) and any other qualification deemed equivalent by the Faculty. Geoinformatics The objective of this programme is to provide a working knowledge of the use and management of Geoinformatics. The entry requirement for this programme is a Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Engineering, Computer Science, Agriculture or Geography which includes Mathematics and Computer Science or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Board for Graduate Studies & Research. land administration This programme is being developed to address the reform of the policies, procedures, statutes and institutions involved in Land Administration and Management throughout the Caribbean. This programme is a response to the need to maintain and strengthen the human resources employed in land administration and land management in key institutions of the state, and private or quasi-state sectors. The main condition for entry is a relevant first degree and relevant industrial experience or maturity and professional experience acceptable to the Faculty. Present entry requirements for either the M.Sc. in Urban and Regional Planning or the M.Sc. in Geoinformatics, are also acceptable. Petroleum engineering Petroleum engineering and management Petroleum management The objective of the Postgraduate Diploma programmes in Petroleum Engineering and Management is to arrest the shortage of managerial manpower in the petroleum industry. The programmes also seek to equip engineers and scientists in the petroleum industry with the modern knowledge base to enable the development of the industry. Additionally, they will provide continued research into the many problems that face the petroleum industry. page 18 > t h e u n i v e r s i t y o f t h e w e s t i n d i e s – s t . a u g u s t i n e c a m p u s master of Science (m.Sc.) Degrees The course of study for an M.Sc. requires a student to engage in courses of instruction and supervised research work that culminates in the submission of a research project. Full-time students must normally submit their project report three months after completion of the written examinations, while part-time students are required to do so within twelve months after completion of their written examinations. The M.Sc. Project Report should not exceed 150 pages including Appendices. m.Sc. Degrees are offered in: Chemical and Process engineering Chemical and Process engineering with management Chemical and Process engineering with environmental engineering The aims and objectives of these programmes are to ensure technical deepening and broadening beyond the level covered by the B.Sc. Honours Degree, to allow students to engage in creative and innovative development of Engineering technology; to gain experience in team-working while broadening the knowledge base through research and experimentation and to meet the full requisites of UK SPEC for eventual registration of our graduates as Chartered Engineers. There are two routes of admission into these programmes as follows: Route 1 requires four (4) continuous years of study leading to the award of the B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. (Eng) Degrees. Students following this route would be expected to undergo a Co-op Industrial Attachment at the end of the third year (June-August) before entering the programme in September. Route 2 requires successful completion of the B.Sc. Honours Degree in Chemical and Process Engineering followed by two (2) years of initial Professional Development in the workplace. Coastal Zone engineering and management The objective of this programme is to equip the graduate with: the necessary knowledge of coastal processes and techniques required for the design and assessment of coastal defence systems, including mitigation measures for hurricanes and other extreme events; the capability to develop coastal zone management systems and to be able to manage the implementation and monitoring of coastal zone plans and projects. Admission to this programme requires that applicants have a first degree from an approved university in the Natural Sciences, Planning, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Surveying, Land Information and a minimum of one year of related professional experience; or an accredited BTech or HND/Associate degree in Civil Engineering plus five (5) years related postgraduate experience. The programme consists of a set of courses grouped under four major subject groups and a final project.
