<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong><br />

oral & PiCTorial reCorDS<br />

<strong>The</strong> UWI has taken <strong>the</strong> lead in establishing a<br />

mechanism to collect and preserve oral information<br />

about <strong>the</strong> history and culture <strong>of</strong> Trinidad &<br />

Tobago. <strong>The</strong> Main Library’s Oral & Pictorial Records<br />

Programme (OPReP), was established in 1981<br />

to ga<strong>the</strong>r historical data on Trinidad & Tobago.<br />

Interviews are conducted with persons who have<br />

created history or who witnessed important events.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Programme also aims to collect photographs<br />

<strong>of</strong> historical interest and to identify o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

repositories/researchers in oral history relevant<br />

to Trinidad & Tobago.<br />

miCr<strong>of</strong>ilm<br />

<strong>The</strong> Main Library’s micr<strong>of</strong>ilm collection includes<br />

a wide range <strong>of</strong> primary source materials, which<br />

though not unique, support <strong>postgraduate</strong> study on<br />

<strong>West</strong> Indian topics in <strong>the</strong> Humanities and Social<br />

Sciences. <strong>The</strong>se include:<br />

• Several Trinidad & Tobago newspapers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nineteenth and twentieth centuries<br />

• Colonial Office documents on Trinidad &<br />

Tobago<br />

• Anti-Slavery Collections<br />

• Letter-Books <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Society for <strong>the</strong><br />

Propagation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel<br />

• Clippings File <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Schomberg Center for<br />

Research in Black Culture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New York<br />

<strong>The</strong> special libraries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Education, <strong>the</strong><br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> International Relations and <strong>the</strong> Seismic<br />

Research Unit serve mainly <strong>the</strong> Departments and<br />

Faculties in which <strong>the</strong>y are located. <strong>The</strong> Library<br />

located at <strong>the</strong> Arthur Lok Jack School <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

serves <strong>the</strong> students <strong>of</strong> that institute.<br />

faCulTY <strong>of</strong> meDiCal SCienCeS<br />

liBrarY<br />

<strong>The</strong> Medical Sciences Library (MSL) serves primarily<br />

<strong>the</strong> staff and students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Medical<br />

Sciences, but its services and resources are<br />

available to <strong>the</strong> wider <strong>University</strong> community. <strong>The</strong><br />

MSL is easily accessed on <strong>the</strong> ground level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty building. It is fully air-conditioned and has<br />

a relatively large area for multimedia services.<br />

<strong>The</strong> library also provides computer facilities, with<br />

access to 22 internet-accessible computers, and<br />

facilities for printing in both colour and black and<br />

white. <strong>The</strong>re are 4 seminar rooms, a multi-media<br />

equipped Group Viewing Room and a Computer<br />

Training room. Wireless computing is available<br />

within <strong>the</strong> library and environs.<br />

T he MS L’ s c o l l e c t io n no w s t a nd s a t<br />

approximately:<br />

• 32,000 monographs<br />

• Over 500 journal titles<br />

• 1,100 multimedia resources (including<br />

videotapes, CD-ROMS, DVDs, audiotapes and<br />

slide tapes)<br />

<strong>The</strong> collection is being continuously developed<br />

to support <strong>the</strong> teaching and research activities<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> Medical Sciences Library, <strong>the</strong> same range<br />

<strong>of</strong> research, reference and information services as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Main Library is provided. This includes <strong>the</strong>sis<br />

checking and information literacy, however binding<br />

is done only at <strong>the</strong> Main Library. Introduction to<br />

library services and resources, as well as to library<br />

research and reference skills is provided for groups<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>postgraduate</strong> students on a regular basis.<br />

ComPuTer & informaTion<br />

reSourCeS<br />

<strong>The</strong> campus boasts a high-speed computer<br />

network. Consisting <strong>of</strong> a fibre-optic data highway,<br />

this network connects faculties, departments<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Halls <strong>of</strong> Residence. Campus Information<br />

Technology Service (CITS) works with <strong>the</strong> faculties<br />

and departments to provide relevant computer<br />

facilities to help you with your studies.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are a number <strong>of</strong> computer laboratories<br />

available for student use, each fully equipped with<br />

Internet access, <strong>the</strong> latest version <strong>of</strong> Micros<strong>of</strong>t<br />

Office, black and white printers and scanners.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is also subject specific s<strong>of</strong>tware such<br />

asstatistical and geographic mapping s<strong>of</strong>tware.<br />

Several computer labs are available exclusively for<br />

student use in <strong>the</strong> Halls <strong>of</strong> Residence. In addition,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is a wireless network which provides access<br />

to students with wireless capable devices.<br />

WeBCT<br />

Several lecturers are using WebCT as an e-learning<br />

environment that supports on-line delivery <strong>of</strong><br />

courses to supplement course material and enhance<br />

<strong>the</strong> classroom experience.<br />
