aCaDemiC faCiliTieS aT The University of The West Indies liBrarY SerViCeS The Campus Libraries serve as the local repository for and the principal gateway to current information and the scholarly record. The Libraries operate to offer students and faculty strong support for instruction and research through collections containing hundreds of thousands of books, journals, multimedia and other information resources. Comprising the Main and Medical Sciences Libraries, as well as the special libraries housed at the School of Education, the Institute of International Relations, the Arthur Lok Jack School of Business and the Seismic Unit, the Campus Libraries provide an online catalogue and access to an increasing number of research databases via the Internet. The main liBrarY The Main Library is the largest of the Campus Libraries and is organised according to four subject divisions: • General Reference • Loans Division • West Indiana • Special Collections Division The Main Library subscribes to over 49,199 bound periodicals and currently has over 396,592 monographs, with 8,000 added to the collection annually. It also houses a distinguished collection of rare Caribbean materials. Non-print assets include a variety of resources including CD-ROM and online databases, microfilm, audio and video recordings on various media including cassettes, vinyl and CD. Facilities include computer laboratories, seminar rooms, faculty studies, a multimedia room and zones for reading and quiet study. There is also a wide range of research and information services such as the circulation of materials, literature searches, reference requests, compilation of bibliographies, inter-library loans, document delivery, photocopying, thesis checking and binding, user education and many others. The unique CariBBean reSourCeS of The main liBrarY The Main Library’s unique Caribbean resources are held in the West Indiana and Special Collections Division which is dedicated to ensuring that material concerning the West Indies is preserved for the use of present and future researchers. The West Indiana and Special Collections Division contains a wealth of unpublished source materials such as books, serials, newspapers, theses, manuscripts, maps, photographs, prints, rare books and special archival collections. The aim is to develop a comprehensive collection of material on the English-speaking Caribbean, with priority given to Trinidad & Tobago. However, researchers can also access material on the wider Caribbean. The ColleCTionS Included among the special collections are several important collections of international significance. Three of them, the Derek Walcott Collection, the Eric Williams Memorial Collection, and the C.L.R. James Collection have been accepted for inclusion in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in recognition of their exceptional value and the need for them to be protected for the benefit of all humanity. For the specialised study of Caribbean Literature, the Main Library also has the collected works and papers of Earl Lovelace, winner of the Commonwealth Literature Prize; the late Samuel Selvon, distinguished Caribbean fiction writer; and renowned author and historian, Michael Anthony. Another important collection for the study of the economic history of Trinidad & Tobago is the Colonial Bank Correspondence. The collection of letters consists of the incoming correspondence to the Colonial Bank in Trinidad from its inception in 1837 to 1885. It comprises a total of 1,848 items, the majority of which - about 57% - are letters from the Court of Directors in London to the Manager. aCaDemiC faCiliTieS aT The University of The West Indies oral & PiCTorial reCorDS The UWI has taken the lead in establishing a mechanism to collect and preserve oral information about the history and culture of Trinidad & Tobago. The Main Library’s Oral & Pictorial Records Programme (OPReP), was established in 1981 to gather historical data on Trinidad & Tobago. Interviews are conducted with persons who have created history or who witnessed important events. The Programme also aims to collect photographs of historical interest and to identify other repositories/researchers in oral history relevant to Trinidad & Tobago. miCrofilm The Main Library’s microfilm collection includes a wide range of primary source materials, which though not unique, support postgraduate study on West Indian topics in the Humanities and Social Sciences. These include: • Several Trinidad & Tobago newspapers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries • Colonial Office documents on Trinidad & Tobago • Anti-Slavery Collections • Letter-Books of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel • Clippings File of the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library page 6 > t h e u n i v e r s i t y o f t h e w e s t i n d i e s – s t . a u g u s t i n e c a m p u s oTher CamPuS liBrarieS The special libraries of the School of Education, the Institute of International Relations and the Seismic Research Unit serve mainly the Departments and Faculties in which they are located. The Library located at the Arthur Lok Jack School of Business serves the students of that institute. faCulTY of meDiCal SCienCeS liBrarY The Medical Sciences Library (MSL) serves primarily the staff and students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, but its services and resources are available to the wider University community. The MSL is easily accessed on the ground level of the Faculty building. It is fully air-conditioned and has a relatively large area for multimedia services. The library also provides computer facilities, with access to 22 internet-accessible computers, and facilities for printing in both colour and black and white. There are 4 seminar rooms, a multi-media equipped Group Viewing Room and a Computer Training room. Wireless computing is available within the library and environs. T he MS L’ s c o l l e c t io n no w s t a nd s a t approximately: • 32,000 monographs • Over 500 journal titles • 1,100 multimedia resources (including videotapes, CD-ROMS, DVDs, audiotapes and slide tapes) The collection is being continuously developed to support the teaching and research activities of the Faculty. At the Medical Sciences Library, the same range of research, reference and information services as the Main Library is provided. This includes thesis checking and information literacy, however binding is done only at the Main Library. Introduction to library services and resources, as well as to library research and reference skills is provided for groups of postgraduate students on a regular basis. ComPuTer & informaTion reSourCeS The campus boasts a high-speed computer network. Consisting of a fibre-optic data highway, this network connects faculties, departments and the Halls of Residence. Campus Information Technology Service (CITS) works with the faculties and departments to provide relevant computer facilities to help you with your studies. There are a number of computer laboratories available for student use, each fully equipped with Internet access, the latest version of Microsoft Office, black and white printers and scanners. There is also subject specific software such asstatistical and geographic mapping software. Several computer labs are available exclusively for student use in the Halls of Residence. In addition, there is a wireless network which provides access to students with wireless capable devices. Computer facilities are available at: • Faculty of Engineering • Faculty of Humanities & Education • School of Natural Sciences • Faculty of Social Sciences • Halls of Residence • Student Activity Centre WeBCT Several lecturers are using WebCT as an e-learning environment that supports on-line delivery of courses to supplement course material and enhance the classroom experience. www.sta.uwi.edu
