<strong>The</strong> Campus Libraries serve as <strong>the</strong> local repository<br />

for and <strong>the</strong> principal gateway to current<br />

information and <strong>the</strong> scholarly record. <strong>The</strong><br />

Libraries operate to <strong>of</strong>fer students and faculty<br />

strong support for instruction and research<br />

through collections containing hundreds <strong>of</strong><br />

thousands <strong>of</strong> books, journals, multimedia and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r information resources. Comprising <strong>the</strong><br />

Main and Medical Sciences Libraries, as well<br />

as <strong>the</strong> special libraries housed at <strong>the</strong> School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Education, <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> International<br />

Relations, <strong>the</strong> Arthur Lok Jack School <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Seismic Unit, <strong>the</strong> Campus Libraries<br />

provide an online catalogue and access to an<br />

increasing number <strong>of</strong> research databases via<br />

<strong>the</strong> Internet.<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-campus resources on presentation <strong>of</strong> a valid<br />

<strong>The</strong> main liBrarY<br />

<strong>The</strong> Main Library is <strong>the</strong> largest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Campus<br />

Libraries and is organised according to four<br />

subject divisions:<br />

• General Reference<br />

• Loans Division<br />

• <strong>West</strong> Indiana<br />

• Special Collections Division<br />

<strong>The</strong> Main Library subscribes to over 49,199<br />

bound periodicals and currently has over 396,592<br />

monographs, with 8,000 added to <strong>the</strong> collection<br />

annually. It also houses a distinguished<br />

collection <strong>of</strong> rare Caribbean materials.<br />

Non-print assets include a variety <strong>of</strong> resources<br />

including CD-ROM and online databases,<br />

micr<strong>of</strong>ilm, audio and video recordings on<br />

various media including cassettes, vinyl and CD.<br />

Facilities include computer laboratories, seminar<br />

rooms, faculty studies, a multimedia room and<br />

zones for reading and quiet study. <strong>The</strong>re is also a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> research and information services<br />

such as <strong>the</strong> circulation <strong>of</strong> materials, literature<br />

searches, reference requests, compilation <strong>of</strong><br />

bibliographies, inter-library loans, document<br />

delivery, photocopying, <strong>the</strong>sis checking and<br />

binding, user education and many o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> unique CariBBean<br />

reSourCeS <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> main liBrarY<br />

<strong>The</strong> Main Library’s unique Caribbean resources are<br />

held in <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> Indiana and Special Collections<br />

Division which is dedicated to ensuring that<br />

material concerning <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong> is preserved<br />

for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> present and future researchers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>West</strong> Indiana and Special Collections<br />

Division contains a wealth <strong>of</strong> unpublished source<br />

materials such as books, serials, newspapers,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ses, manuscripts, maps, photographs, prints,<br />

rare books and special archival collections. <strong>The</strong><br />

aim is to develop a comprehensive collection <strong>of</strong><br />

material on <strong>the</strong> English-speaking Caribbean, with<br />

priority given to Trinidad & Tobago. However,<br />

researchers can also access material on <strong>the</strong><br />

wider Caribbean.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ColleCTionS<br />

Included among <strong>the</strong> special collections are<br />

several important collections <strong>of</strong> international<br />

significance. Three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> Derek Walcott<br />

Collection, <strong>the</strong> Eric Williams Memorial Collection,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> C.L.R. James Collection have been<br />

accepted for inclusion in <strong>the</strong> UNESCO Memory<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World Register in recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

exceptional value and <strong>the</strong> need for <strong>the</strong>m to be<br />

protected for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> all humanity.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> specialised study <strong>of</strong> Caribbean Literature,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Main Library also has <strong>the</strong> collected works<br />

and papers <strong>of</strong> Earl Lovelace, winner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Commonwealth Literature Prize; <strong>the</strong> late Samuel<br />

Selvon, distinguished Caribbean fiction writer;<br />

and renowned author and historian, Michael<br />

Anthony.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r important collection for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> economic history <strong>of</strong> Trinidad & Tobago is <strong>the</strong><br />

Colonial Bank Correspondence. <strong>The</strong> collection <strong>of</strong><br />

letters consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> incoming correspondence<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Colonial Bank in Trinidad from its<br />

inception in 1837 to 1885. It comprises a total<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1,848 items, <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> which - about<br />

57% - are letters from <strong>the</strong> Court <strong>of</strong> Directors in<br />

London to <strong>the</strong> Manager. <strong>The</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> primary<br />

source <strong>of</strong> information on <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Colonial Bank in Trinidad and on banking in<br />

general from a historical perspective.<br />
