Scholarships, Grants and Studentships

Research grants are awarded to Departments/
Faculties only for research projects that involve
research students and the funding is normally
restricted to capital items.
In establishing priorities for a research grant the
Campus Committee is guided by the following
considerations:
(i) the urgency of the programme/
projects
(ii) the contribution it is likely to make to
the Caribbean Region
(iii) the likely effect on the further
development of graduate studies
(iv) Manpower needs within and outside of
the University
Procedure for applications
Applications on the prescribed forms are to be
submitted to the Senior Assistant Registrar,
Office of Graduate Studies and Research, St.
Augustine for consideration by the Campus
Research and Publication Fund Committee.
Applications in the form of a Call for applications
are posted on the Graduate Studies website,
http://sta.uwi.edu/postgrad/awards.asp , and
University’s Notice Boards, advertised on the
local intranet and sent via hard copy to all
Departments as well as by e-mail to the entire
Campus Community.
Deadline dates for Applications – Three weeks
before each meeting. In addition, the Campus
Research and Publication Fund Committee
requires a report on the expenditure of the grant
and on the progress of the research project.

Visits
Subject to availability of funds, the Campus
Committee considers requests from Supervisors/
Heads of Departments for assistance with travel/
costs in connection with research projects, in
which research candidates are involved, and
supports the attendance of graduate students
involved in the presentation of a paper at
regional and extra regional conferences.
There is now a requirement that students
produce publications out of these conference
presentations.
reproduction of Thesis Grant
A grant is available for full-time students
towards the production of Ph.D. M.Phil. theses
or its equivalent provided that the thesis is
submitted within one year in excess of the
minimum time specified in the Regulations. This
is known as the Reproduction of Thesis Grant
and students are required to submit a letter to
the Office of Graduate Studies and Research in
writing requesting this grant. The letter should
include the date of commencement of degree
and submission of thesis. The Chair approves
this grant.
Per Capita Grant
Where funds are available from the Departmental
Allocation, called Per Capita Grant, small grants
can also be made to part-time and full-time M.A.,
M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students to assist in the
production of Research Papers.
For the disbursement of funds for thesis
preparation, no consideration shall be accorded
members of staff who are also graduate
students.
Per Capita Grant – higher Degree
by Coursework
Students pursuing higher degrees by coursework
i.e. Taught Master’s (M.Sc., M.A.) are not
normally considered for UWI awards but may be
considered for a grant for the research portion of
the programme, funds for which can be accessed
from the Departmental Allocation called the Per
Capita Grant. Students who are registered in
self-financing postgraduate programmes as well
as Diploma programmes are not eligible to apply
for funding from the Per Capita Grant.
Per Capita Grant – higher Degree by
research
Students pursuing higher degrees by research i.e.
M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees are also eligible to apply for
funding from the Per Capita Grant.
STuDenTShiPS
Part-time employment may also be available and
enquiries should be made to the Head of the
Department and/or Dean, Faculty in which the student
is pursuing a higher degree.
Graduate students may be employed within the
University for up to twelve (12) hours a week without
losing their full-time student status. This can be in the
form of Demonstrators, Teaching Assistants, Research
Assistants and Student Assistants.
fee DeaDlineS
All students are now required to pay tuition fees
by Semester. Registration is not complete until the
relevant amount is paid. These costs, which change
each academic year, are available on the postgraduate
website at www.sta.uwi.edu/postgrad.
Government assistance for Tuition
expenses (GaTe)
Students who are citizens of Trinidad and Tobago only
may apply to the Ministry of Science, Technology and
Tertiary Education for grants to cover 50% of their
tuition fees.
These Regulations apply to graduate students. The
University reserves the right, without notice, to
withdraw or restructure courses, to make changes in
the regulations and fees, as it may from time to time
judge to be necessary or desirable. Admission to
the University is subject to the requirement that the
student will comply with the University’s registration
procedure and will observe the Ordinances and
Regulations of the University.
