Scholarships, Grants and <strong>St</strong>udentships<br />

reSearCh GranTS<br />

Research grants are awarded to Departments/<br />

Faculties only for research projects that involve<br />

research students and <strong>the</strong> funding is normally<br />

restricted to capital items.<br />

In establishing priorities for a research grant <strong>the</strong><br />

Campus Committee is guided by <strong>the</strong> following<br />

considerations:<br />

(i) <strong>the</strong> urgency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme/<br />

projects<br />

(ii) <strong>the</strong> contribution it is likely to make to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Caribbean Region<br />

(iii) <strong>the</strong> likely effect on <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

development <strong>of</strong> graduate studies<br />

(iv) Manpower needs within and outside <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Procedure for applications<br />

Applications on <strong>the</strong> prescribed forms are to be<br />

submitted to <strong>the</strong> Senior Assistant Registrar,<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research, <strong>St</strong>.<br />

Augustine for consideration by <strong>the</strong> Campus<br />

Research and Publication Fund Committee.<br />

Applications in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a Call for applications<br />

are posted on <strong>the</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies website,<br />

http://sta.uwi.edu/postgrad/awards.asp , and<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Notice Boards, advertised on <strong>the</strong><br />

local intranet and sent via hard copy to all<br />

Departments as well as by e-mail to <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

Campus Community.<br />

Deadline dates for Applications – Three weeks<br />

before each meeting. In addition, <strong>the</strong> Campus<br />

Research and Publication Fund Committee<br />

requires a report on <strong>the</strong> expenditure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> grant<br />

and on <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research project.<br />

Subject to availability <strong>of</strong> funds, <strong>the</strong> Campus<br />

Committee considers requests from Supervisors/<br />

Heads <strong>of</strong> Departments for assistance with travel/<br />

costs in connection with research projects, in<br />

which research candidates are involved, and<br />

supports <strong>the</strong> attendance <strong>of</strong> graduate students<br />

involved in <strong>the</strong> presentation <strong>of</strong> a paper at<br />

regional and extra regional conferences.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is now a requirement that students<br />

produce publications out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se conference<br />

presentations.<br />

reproduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>sis Grant<br />

A grant is available for full-time students<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> Ph.D. M.Phil. <strong>the</strong>ses<br />

or its equivalent provided that <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis is<br />

submitted within one year in excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

minimum time specified in <strong>the</strong> Regulations. This<br />

is known as <strong>the</strong> Reproduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>sis Grant<br />

and students are required to submit a letter to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research in<br />

writing requesting this grant. <strong>The</strong> letter should<br />

include <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

and submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis. <strong>The</strong> Chair approves<br />

this grant.<br />

Per Capita Grant<br />

Where funds are available from <strong>the</strong> Departmental<br />

Allocation, called Per Capita Grant, small grants<br />

can also be made to part-time and full-time M.A.,<br />

M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students to assist in <strong>the</strong><br />

production <strong>of</strong> Research Papers.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> disbursement <strong>of</strong> funds for <strong>the</strong>sis<br />

preparation, no consideration shall be accorded<br />

members <strong>of</strong> staff who are also graduate<br />

students.<br />

Per Capita Grant – higher Degree<br />

by Coursework<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents pursuing higher degrees by coursework<br />

i.e. Taught Master’s (M.Sc., M.A.) are not<br />

normally considered for UWI awards but may be<br />

considered for a grant for <strong>the</strong> research portion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> programme, funds for which can be accessed<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Departmental Allocation called <strong>the</strong> Per<br />

Capita Grant. <strong>St</strong>udents who are registered in<br />

self-financing <strong>postgraduate</strong> programmes as well<br />

as Diploma programmes are not eligible to apply<br />

for funding from <strong>the</strong> Per Capita Grant.<br />

Per Capita Grant – higher Degree by<br />

research<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents pursuing higher degrees by research i.e.<br />

M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees are also eligible to apply for<br />

funding from <strong>the</strong> Per Capita Grant.<br />

STuDenTShiPS<br />

Part-time employment may also be available and<br />

enquiries should be made to <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department and/or Dean, Faculty in which <strong>the</strong> student<br />

is pursuing a higher degree.<br />

Graduate students may be employed within <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> for up to twelve (12) hours a week without<br />

losing <strong>the</strong>ir full-time student status. This can be in <strong>the</strong><br />

form <strong>of</strong> Demonstrators, Teaching Assistants, Research<br />

Assistants and <strong>St</strong>udent Assistants.<br />

fee DeaDlineS<br />

All students are now required to pay tuition fees<br />

by Semester. Registration is not complete until <strong>the</strong><br />

relevant amount is paid. <strong>The</strong>se costs, which change<br />

each academic year, are available on <strong>the</strong> <strong>postgraduate</strong><br />

website at www.sta.uwi.edu/postgrad.<br />

Government assistance for Tuition<br />

expenses (GaTe)<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents who are citizens <strong>of</strong> Trinidad and Tobago only<br />

may apply to <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Science, Technology and<br />

Tertiary Education for grants to cover 50% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

tuition fees.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se Regulations apply to graduate students. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> reserves <strong>the</strong> right, without notice, to<br />

withdraw or restructure courses, to make changes in<br />

<strong>the</strong> regulations and fees, as it may from time to time<br />

judge to be necessary or desirable. Admission to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> is subject to <strong>the</strong> requirement that <strong>the</strong><br />

student will comply with <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s registration<br />

procedure and will observe <strong>the</strong> Ordinances and<br />

Regulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
