informaTion on Scholarships, Grants and <strong>St</strong>udentships reSearCh GranTS Research grants are awarded to Departments/ Faculties only for research projects that involve research students and <strong>the</strong> funding is normally restricted to capital items. In establishing priorities for a research grant <strong>the</strong> Campus Committee is guided by <strong>the</strong> following considerations: (i) <strong>the</strong> urgency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme/ projects (ii) <strong>the</strong> contribution it is likely to make to <strong>the</strong> Caribbean Region (iii) <strong>the</strong> likely effect on <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r development <strong>of</strong> graduate studies (iv) Manpower needs within and outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Procedure for applications Applications on <strong>the</strong> prescribed forms are to be submitted to <strong>the</strong> Senior Assistant Registrar, Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research, <strong>St</strong>. Augustine for consideration by <strong>the</strong> Campus Research and Publication Fund Committee. Applications in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> a Call for applications are posted on <strong>the</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies website, http://sta.uwi.edu/postgrad/awards.asp , and <strong>University</strong>’s Notice Boards, advertised on <strong>the</strong> local intranet and sent via hard copy to all Departments as well as by e-mail to <strong>the</strong> entire Campus Community. This is known as <strong>the</strong> Reproduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>sis Grant and students are required to submit a letter to <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research in writing requesting this grant. <strong>The</strong> letter should include <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> commencement <strong>of</strong> degree and submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis. <strong>The</strong> Chair approves this grant. Per Capita Grant Where funds are available from <strong>the</strong> Departmental Allocation, called Per Capita Grant, small grants can also be made to part-time and full-time M.A., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students to assist in <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> Research Papers. For <strong>the</strong> disbursement <strong>of</strong> funds for <strong>the</strong>sis preparation, no consideration shall be accorded members <strong>of</strong> staff who are also graduate students. Per Capita Grant – higher Degree by Coursework <strong>St</strong>udents pursuing higher degrees by coursework i.e. Taught Master’s (M.Sc., M.A.) are not normally considered for UWI awards but may be considered for a grant for <strong>the</strong> research portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme, funds for which can be accessed from <strong>the</strong> Departmental Allocation called <strong>the</strong> Per Capita Grant. <strong>St</strong>udents who are registered in self-financing <strong>postgraduate</strong> programmes as well as Diploma programmes are not eligible to apply for funding from <strong>the</strong> Per Capita Grant. Per Capita Grant – higher Degree by research <strong>St</strong>udents pursuing higher degrees by research i.e. M.Phil./Ph.D. degrees are also eligible to apply for funding from <strong>the</strong> Per Capita Grant. STuDenTShiPS Part-time employment may also be available and enquiries should be made to <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department and/or Dean, Faculty in which <strong>the</strong> student is pursuing a higher degree. Graduate students may be employed within <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> for up to twelve (12) hours a week without losing <strong>the</strong>ir full-time student status. This can be in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> Demonstrators, Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants and <strong>St</strong>udent Assistants. fee DeaDlineS All students are now required to pay tuition fees by Semester. Registration is not complete until <strong>the</strong> relevant amount is paid. <strong>The</strong>se costs, which change each academic year, are available on <strong>the</strong> <strong>postgraduate</strong> website at www.sta.uwi.edu/postgrad. Government assistance for Tuition expenses (GaTe) <strong>St</strong>udents who are citizens <strong>of</strong> Trinidad and Tobago only may apply to <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Science, Technology and Tertiary Education for grants to cover 50% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir tuition fees. <strong>The</strong>se Regulations apply to graduate students. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> reserves <strong>the</strong> right, without notice, to withdraw or restructure courses, to make changes in <strong>the</strong> regulations and fees, as it may from time to time judge to be necessary or desirable.
