inSTiTuTe <strong>of</strong> GenDer anD DeVeloPmenT STuDieS (iGDS)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Institute has its origins in <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Women and Development <strong>St</strong>udies Groups, UWI,<br />

and was established in September 1993. It is<br />

regional in scope, with its regional co-ordinating<br />

unit located at UWI, Mona, Jamaica, with units<br />

on UWI campuses in Jamaica, Barbados and<br />

Trinidad and Tobago.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Institute is committed to a programme <strong>of</strong><br />

teaching, research and outreach which seeks to<br />

question, challenge and understand <strong>the</strong> social<br />

relationship <strong>of</strong> gender in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong>fers a range <strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary<br />

post graduate programmes. <strong>The</strong>se attract<br />

a diverse <strong>of</strong> students who bring different areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> expertise and knowledge to <strong>the</strong> seminars,<br />

courses and research projects. <strong>The</strong> programmes<br />

cater to <strong>the</strong> multi-faceted needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> graduate<br />

client base and include an advanced <strong>postgraduate</strong><br />

diploma, an M.Sc. by coursework and<br />

research project and a research based M.Phil/<br />

In addition to proposed electives, <strong>the</strong> M.Sc.<br />

requires a 20,000 word research project; <strong>the</strong><br />

M.Phil. requires a 50,000 word <strong>the</strong>sis and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ph.D requires an 80,000 word <strong>the</strong>sis An<br />

internship and 12,000 word report is an option<br />

for MSc students.<br />

Pre-requisites:<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents wishing to enter a graduate programme<br />

may need to complete qualifying courses<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y do not have a UWI Minor in Gender<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies OR Gender and Development <strong>St</strong>udies, a<br />

relevant complement <strong>of</strong> courses or o<strong>the</strong>r similar<br />

qualification from ano<strong>the</strong>r university. Qualifying<br />

courses would include core <strong>the</strong>ory courses from<br />

among <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

• Feminist <strong>The</strong>oretical Frameworks –GEND<br />

• Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Gender I – GEND3501<br />

• Sex, Gender and Society – SOCI3031<br />

• Gender and Development with Reference to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Caribbean –SOCI3039<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r courses relevant for <strong>the</strong> specific research<br />

interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student may also be required.<br />

<strong>The</strong> IGDS programme accepts full-time and parttime<br />

students. It is intended for a wide range<br />

<strong>of</strong> participants including activists and persons<br />

working in governmental and non-governmental<br />

organisations. Interested applicants should<br />

inquire about <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> places within<br />

<strong>the</strong> programme. Graduate intakes are normally<br />

every two years, however exceptions can be made<br />

in individual cases. <strong>The</strong> graduate programmes<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Institute are designed to provide an<br />

integrated, interdisciplinary programme <strong>of</strong><br />

gender and development studies across faculties<br />

and disciplines at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong><br />

<strong>Indies</strong>. <strong>The</strong>y aim to provide graduate students<br />

with <strong>the</strong> skills and <strong>the</strong> resources through which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y can deepen <strong>the</strong> academic discourse on<br />

Caribbean feminism and contribute to <strong>the</strong><br />

development <strong>of</strong> an indigenous body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory,<br />

knowledge and research for <strong>the</strong> Caribbean. This<br />

in turn should contribute to an improved quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> life for women and men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Diploma <strong>of</strong>fers students a more in-depth<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> modern techniques and<br />

an enhanced capacity to address issues <strong>of</strong> gender<br />

and development in a globalizing world. <strong>The</strong> M.Sc.<br />

is a two year degree providing senior pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

with a range <strong>of</strong> modern techniques for understanding<br />

and addressing developmental issues. <strong>The</strong> M.Phil.<br />

and Ph.D degrees are designed to enhance research<br />

and analytical skills in order to produce scholars,<br />

policy makers and activists capable <strong>of</strong> developing<br />

a body <strong>of</strong> gender based knowledge and research on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Caribbean<br />

Research students who register for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. degree<br />

may seek to upgrade to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. degree. A research<br />

student works in his/her chosen field <strong>of</strong> research under<br />

<strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> a supervisor who has substantial<br />

expertise and experience in <strong>the</strong> field. Candidates may<br />

select research topics from <strong>the</strong> following areas, but<br />

are not limited to <strong>the</strong>se:<br />

• Gender, Science and Technology<br />

(with a focus on <strong>the</strong> Environment and Water)<br />

• Gender and Sexuality<br />

• Men and Masculinities<br />

• Gender-based Differentials in Educational<br />

Performance<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Making <strong>of</strong> Feminisms in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean<br />

• Gender and Caribbean Iconography<br />

• Women, Gender and Development<br />

• Feminist <strong>The</strong>ory and Epistemology<br />

• Gender and Health<br />

• Gender and Caribbean Historiography<br />

• Women, Gender and Caribbean Literature<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents who undertake <strong>postgraduate</strong> work at IGDS<br />

benefit from guidance in <strong>the</strong>ir research by competent,<br />

well trained and highly regarded academics. <strong>The</strong>y are<br />

given opportunities to establish linkages with national,<br />

regional and international institutions concerned with<br />

Feminist scholarship and Gender <strong>St</strong>udies. Candidates<br />

will leave IGDS having acquired <strong>the</strong> skills that allow<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to carry out research, provide advisory services,<br />

influence policy directions and assist with capacity<br />

building in national and global institutions.<br />
