T h e f a C u l T Y o f Science & Agriculture DeParTmenT of life SCienCeS The Department of Life Sciences specialises in two of the most innovative and dynamic areas of current research and development, namely Environmental Biology and Biotechnology. Environmental Biology research focuses on topics such as biodiversity, conservation biology, pollution impacts and management, and natural resources management (e.g. tropical forests, fisheries and aquaculture). There is also a long history of research and development projects in Biotechnology including Plant Tissue Culture. Recent research projects use molecular approaches such as Recombinant DNA Technology. Research also focuses on providing new knowledge on the physiology and metabolism of tropical plants in important areas such as tuberisation, abscission and mechanism of resistance to pests and pathogens. Studies in Microbiology and Crop Protection are also important focal areas. In addition to the above, research is ongoing in the traditional disciplines such as Biochemistry, Botany, and Zoology, Ecology, Epidemiology and control of diseases of public health importance. The Department offers postgraduate programmes leading to the award of M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. The Department has specialist laboratories in Biotechnology and Tissue Culture, Entomology, Environmental Biology, Ecology, Parasitology, Ecotoxicology, Biosystematics, Biochemistry, Histology, Microbiology, and Aquaculture and Fisheries. The Department also maintains the National Herbarium, Zoology Museum, Land Arthropod Collection and several greenhouses. Diploma/M.Sc in Science & Management of Tropical Biodiversity The graduate degree in Science & Management of Tropical Biodiversity is a taught program geared towards building and strengthening capacity in environmental management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the Caribbean. The M.Sc. degree is awarded on the basis of taught courses and a project. The M.Phil. and Ph.D. are research degrees awarded on the submission and successful defence of a thesis. The main research areas in Computer Science are Distributed Computing, Networking, Software Engineering, Neural Networks Internet Technologies, Database Systems, Information Visualisation, Object-Oriented Systems Programming Aptitude, Teaching music for the Pan, Advanced Learning Technologies and Artificial Intelligence. In Mathematics, the current research areas include Graph Theory and Combinatorics, Fluid Dynamics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematical Modelling and Nonlinear Dynamics. At present the main areas of research in Statistics are in Statistical Inference, Bio-Statistics, Epidemiology and Statistical Demography. m.Sc. Degree in Computer Science This programme is designed for Computer Science graduates who are in careers in the computing industry. It provides advanced training in many diverse areas of Computer Science. To be admitted directly to the M.Sc in Computer Science, a candidate should normally possess a degree equivalent to a Lower Second Class B.Sc. degree with a major in Computer Science. Candidates with lower qualifications may be considered but will be required to pass qualifying courses, as prescribed by the Department. The M.Sc. Computer Science is offered on both a part-time and full-time basis. The course of study will extend over one year of full-time or two years of part-time study. m.Sc. Degree in mathematics To be admitted to the programme, a candidate should normally possess a B.Sc. degree with a major in Mathematics or equivalent with at least Lower Second Class Honours. Candidates with lower qualifications may be considered but will be required to pass qualifying courses, as prescribed by the department.. m.Sc. Degree in Statistics To be admitted to the programme, a candidate should possess a B.Sc. degree with at least a Lower Second Class Honours or its equivalent.
