<strong>The</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> International Relations (IIR)<br />

operates as a regional and autonomous academic<br />

institution, affiliated with <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>. <strong>The</strong> mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IIR is to<br />

produce generalists with multiple marketable<br />

skills and experience, related to varied types<br />

<strong>of</strong> employment. With such a mission, <strong>the</strong> IIR<br />

gives students <strong>the</strong> opportunity to combine <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

international relations programmes <strong>of</strong> study<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r marketable concerns. <strong>The</strong> work <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> IIR concerns teaching and research, as well<br />

as <strong>the</strong> advanced study <strong>of</strong> international relations<br />

<strong>of</strong> developing countries, in particular Latin<br />

America and <strong>the</strong> Caribbean. Courses emphasise<br />

a multidisciplinary approach to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong><br />

International Relations. <strong>The</strong> subject areas <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

include: International Politics, International Law,<br />

International Money and Finance, International<br />

Trade and Economic Development, International<br />

Relations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caribbean, International<br />

Relations <strong>of</strong> Latin America, and <strong>the</strong> Political<br />

Economy <strong>of</strong> International Development and<br />

Organisation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> International Relations, in 2009<br />

organised with o<strong>the</strong>rs discussions around <strong>the</strong> two<br />

Summits in Port-<strong>of</strong>-Spain in 2009 and Academic<br />

Council on <strong>the</strong> UN System (ACUNS) Annual<br />

General Meeting in June 2009; it has ‘strategic<br />

alliances’ with compatible organisations like <strong>the</strong><br />

Centre for International Governance Innovation<br />

(CIGI); it <strong>of</strong>fered its M.Sc. in 2008/9 at Anton<br />

de Kom <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Suriname in Paramaribo;<br />

it has developing projects with Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Caribbean <strong>St</strong>ates (ACS), European Centre for<br />

Development Policy Management (ECDPM) and<br />

<strong>the</strong> United Nations <strong>University</strong>’s Comparative<br />

Regional Integration <strong>St</strong>udies (UNU-CRIS); and<br />

it organises educational excursions to CARICOM,<br />

Suriname & Panama &, in 2009 for <strong>the</strong> 50th<br />

anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolution, Cuba<br />

Postgraduate Diploma in<br />

international relations<br />

<strong>The</strong> Postgraduate Diploma in International<br />

Relations provides a foundation for candidates<br />

who may not have had a background in<br />

International Relations. It also <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong><br />

necessary training for those who desire to<br />

undertake fur<strong>the</strong>r graduate work in International<br />

Relations or Global <strong>St</strong>udies. Graduates <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Institute usually find employment in a<br />

wide variety <strong>of</strong> fields and occupy prominent<br />

positions.<br />

Admission to <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Diploma in<br />

International Relations is usually open to<br />

candidates who are graduates <strong>of</strong> an approved<br />

university in such fields as Law, Economics,<br />

Political Science, Government, Sociology, Public<br />

Administration, History, Humanities, Spanish<br />

or French, or hold an equivalent qualification<br />

acceptable to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Candidates<br />

may also be required to pass an entrance<br />

examination. Full-time candidates are required<br />

to follow <strong>the</strong> prescribed course <strong>of</strong> study over<br />

one academic year, part-time candidates are<br />

required to complete <strong>the</strong> prescribed course <strong>of</strong><br />

study within two academic years. It includes<br />

a Specialised Seminar and a foreign language<br />

requirement.<br />

master <strong>of</strong> Science (m.Sc.) in Global<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies<br />

<strong>The</strong> M.Sc. in Global <strong>St</strong>udies is an interdisciplinary<br />

programme which provides training in interpreting<br />

and analyzing <strong>the</strong> global political economy and<br />

prepares students for a variety <strong>of</strong> career paths.<br />

To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. programme in Global<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies a candidate must possess ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

• B.Sc. in International Relations or in a<br />

related discipline with a good Second Class<br />

degree.<br />

• A good Second Class degree in any discipline<br />

with a minor in International Relations (IR)<br />

with a grade B+ average in <strong>the</strong> IR Courses<br />

• An appropriate first degree in any discipline<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate Diploma in International<br />

Relations with a grade B average.<br />
