The Institute of International Relations (IIR)
operates as a regional and autonomous academic
institution, affiliated with The University of
the West Indies. The mission of the IIR is to
produce generalists with multiple marketable
skills and experience, related to varied types
of employment. With such a mission, the IIR
gives students the opportunity to combine their
international relations programmes of study
with other marketable concerns. The work of
the IIR concerns teaching and research, as well
as the advanced study of international relations
of developing countries, in particular Latin
America and the Caribbean. Courses emphasise
a multidisciplinary approach to the study of
International Relations. The subject areas offered
include: International Politics, International Law,
International Money and Finance, International
Trade and Economic Development, International
Relations of the Caribbean, International
Relations of Latin America, and the Political
Economy of International Development and
Organisation.
The Institute of International Relations, in 2009
organised with others discussions around the two
Summits in Port-of-Spain in 2009 and Academic
Council on the UN System (ACUNS) Annual
General Meeting in June 2009; it has ‘strategic
alliances’ with compatible organisations like the
Centre for International Governance Innovation
(CIGI); it offered its M.Sc. in 2008/9 at Anton
de Kom University of Suriname in Paramaribo;
it has developing projects with Association of
Caribbean States (ACS), European Centre for
Development Policy Management (ECDPM) and
the United Nations University’s Comparative
Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS); and
it organises educational excursions to CARICOM,
Suriname & Panama &, in 2009 for the 50th
anniversary of the Revolution, Cuba
Postgraduate Diploma in
international relations
The Postgraduate Diploma in International
Relations provides a foundation for candidates
who may not have had a background in
International Relations. It also offers the
necessary training for those who desire to
undertake further graduate work in International
Relations or Global Studies. Graduates of
the Institute usually find employment in a
wide variety of fields and occupy prominent
positions.
Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in
International Relations is usually open to
candidates who are graduates of an approved
university in such fields as Law, Economics,
Political Science, Government, Sociology, Public
Administration, History, Humanities, Spanish
or French, or hold an equivalent qualification
acceptable to The University. Candidates
may also be required to pass an entrance
examination. Full-time candidates are required
to follow the prescribed course of study over
one academic year, part-time candidates are
required to complete the prescribed course of
study within two academic years. It includes
a Specialised Seminar and a foreign language
requirement.
master of Science (m.Sc.) in Global
Studies
The M.Sc. in Global Studies is an interdisciplinary
programme which provides training in interpreting
and analyzing the global political economy and
prepares students for a variety of career paths.
To be admitted to the M.Sc. programme in Global
Studies a candidate must possess either
• B.Sc. in International Relations or in a
related discipline with a good Second Class
degree.
• A good Second Class degree in any discipline
with a minor in International Relations (IR)
with a grade B+ average in the IR Courses
• An appropriate first degree in any discipline
and the Postgraduate Diploma in International
Relations with a grade B average.
