The Faculty of Social Sciences has a long tradition in graduate training and education. Given
the challenges of the current world environment, the Faculty has responded by upgrading and
revising its taught postgraduate programmes that are reflective of the needs of our society.
Recently, new programmes were introduced in Public Sector Management, Criminology and
Criminal Justice, Mediation, Aviation Management, Strategic Leadership and Management,
Tourism Development and Management and Sport Management. Research degrees in the
Faculty have placed some focus on topics like poverty alleviation, sustainable development,
crime and criminal justice, the economic costs of HIV/AIDS, business ethics, economic
modelling, public policy, governance issues and many other areas. The Faculty now offers a
Ph.D. in Business Administration which is modelled along the North American line involving
a significant level of taught courses and a comprehensive examination.
Graduate enrolment in both taught master’s and research degree programmes continues to
increase. In 2008-2009, 433 students were registered in taught master’s programmes and 66
students in research degree programmes in the Faculty.
Recently, the Faculty sought to enhance student learning effectiveness by establishing new
computer laboratory facilities at Campus House and the Faculty Lounge for graduate students
and upgrading a Graduate Students Common Room in Management Studies. We also created,
developed and implemented a Graduate Writing Programme.
The Faculty continued to build research capacity and create an enabling environment for
growth in research activity and dissemination of research results by establishing two online
journals, “The Caribbean Journal of Social Sciences” and “Business, Finance and Economics
in Emerging Economies”. Editorial and Advisory Boards have been constituted for the former
journal and articles are being reviewed for the first issue on Governance. The latter was
created through the collaborative efforts of the Departments of Economics and Management
Studies, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies and the Caribbean Centre
for Money and Finance. The Faculty has introduced a research component in most of the
courses offered in taught master’s programmes and is working towards developing research
clusters in all of its disciplines so as to build research capacity within the Faculty.
The Faculty will continue to develop academic programmes that will satisfy societal needs,
engage in meaningful dialogue with the public and private sectors and further explore intra-
and inter- institutional collaboration to build research capacity and enhance graduate studies
and research.
