Course <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>udy<br />
<strong>The</strong> M.Sc. will normally be a 43-credit<br />
programme.<br />
However, for persons to whom <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate<br />
Diploma was awarded and who choose to take a<br />
break from <strong>the</strong>ir study and re-enter within two<br />
years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Postgraduate<br />
Diploma, <strong>the</strong> programme will be a 49-credit<br />
one.<br />
<strong>The</strong> M.Sc. is comprised <strong>of</strong> a compulsory core and<br />
electives as shown below:<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents will choose electives from among<br />
those approved by <strong>the</strong> Department to satisfy<br />
<strong>the</strong> remaining credit requirements for <strong>the</strong><br />
programme.<br />
However, where it is determined that a student<br />
in his/her earlier tertiary level studies has<br />
successfully completed a course with a grade <strong>of</strong><br />
B or better that is similar in content and scope<br />
to any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> approved elective courses, <strong>the</strong><br />
student will not be allowed to register for <strong>the</strong><br />
course in question.<br />
<strong>The</strong> m.Sc. Tourism Development and<br />
management<br />
Programme objectives<br />
<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Masters Degree is to:<br />
(I) Develop <strong>the</strong> analytical skills <strong>of</strong> policy<br />
makers and planners who are charged with<br />
<strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> planning, developing<br />
and managing <strong>the</strong> region’s tourism<br />
resources in a sustainable manner;<br />
(II) Develop a critical mass <strong>of</strong> intellectual<br />
capital within <strong>the</strong> region that will help<br />
lead <strong>the</strong> way forward in developing<br />
innovative solutions, through research<br />
and scholarship, to address <strong>the</strong> many<br />
challenges facing <strong>the</strong> tourism industry.<br />

Applicants under this category should possess:<br />
(I) A B.Sc. in Hospitality and Tourism or<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r Bachelor’s degree from a <strong>University</strong><br />
or College acceptable to <strong>the</strong> UWI. Such<br />
applicants should possess at least a Lower<br />
Second Class Honours degree.<br />
(II) Preference will be given to persons with<br />
substantial experience at <strong>the</strong> management<br />
level in <strong>the</strong> Hospitality and Tourism<br />
sector.<br />
Course <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>udy<br />
<strong>The</strong> programme is to be delivered on ei<strong>the</strong>r a<br />
part-time basis over two academic years or on<br />
a full-time basis over one calendar year. This<br />
programme carries 42 credits and includes a mix<br />
<strong>of</strong> six (6) core courses and four (4) electives.<br />

additional requirements/information:<br />
1. All students will be required to satisfy <strong>the</strong><br />
Department as to <strong>the</strong>ir reading pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
in a foreign language.<br />
2. All students will be required to participate<br />
in a Tourism Developmental Workshop to be<br />
conducted in Trimester 3 as a departmental<br />
requirement.<br />

3. A student who fails to complete <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. will<br />
not be automatically awarded <strong>the</strong> Pg.Dip. Such a<br />
student would have to successfully complete <strong>the</strong><br />
eight (8) courses required for <strong>the</strong> Pg.Dip. Also,<br />
<strong>the</strong> student must make a request in writing to <strong>the</strong><br />
School for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research through<br />
<strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Management <strong>St</strong>udies<br />
to withdraw from <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research<br />
project explaining <strong>the</strong> reasons for his/her inability<br />
to complete <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. <strong>The</strong> final decision rests with<br />
<strong>the</strong> School for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research. Each<br />
case is examined on its own merit.<br />
Ph.D. Business administration<br />
Programme objectives<br />
<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. programme is to develop<br />
leaders, innovators, and positive change agents<br />
able to work as researchers, teachers, consultants<br />
and administrators in a variety <strong>of</strong> settings including<br />
public and private commercial organisation, Not-forpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />
agencies and academia (colleges/universities).<br />
Rigorous research training is <strong>of</strong>fered to enable<br />
graduates to plan, design, implement and evaluate<br />
research.<br />
<strong>The</strong> curriculum is crafted with several specific<br />
objectives in mind including providing graduates<br />
with an appreciation for <strong>the</strong> broad range <strong>of</strong> issues<br />
– economic, social, institutional, normative, and<br />
political – that surround contemporary business<br />
administration.<br />
<strong>The</strong> specific objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. programme<br />
are:<br />
i. To generate knowledge that will contribute to<br />
an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynamics <strong>of</strong> business<br />
administration in <strong>the</strong> increasing competitive<br />
global economy.<br />
ii. To prepare scholars in selected areas <strong>of</strong> business<br />
administration for careers as researchers and<br />
teachers at <strong>the</strong> UWI and o<strong>the</strong>r major universities<br />
globally.<br />
iii. To prepare leaders in selected areas <strong>of</strong> business<br />
administration for careers as consultants and<br />
administrators in private, public and state-owned<br />
organisations in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean and globally.<br />
iv. To prepare scholars capable <strong>of</strong> generating knowledge<br />
that is inventive and rigorously tested within a<br />
selected area <strong>of</strong> business administration.<br />
v. To prepare individuals who will provide leadership<br />
in business and academia.<br />
vi. To maintain and expand <strong>the</strong> reputation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UWI<br />
as a regional and international leader in <strong>the</strong> field<br />
<strong>of</strong> Business Administration.<br />
