Target Groups and admission requirements<br />

Admissions will be competitive with preference<br />

given to applicants from Caribbean countries.<br />

Approximately ten students in total will<br />

be admitted each year across <strong>the</strong> available<br />

disciplinary areas.<br />

Admission to <strong>the</strong> programme will be based on<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two alternative sets <strong>of</strong> criteria listed<br />

below.<br />

1. Applicants holding a M.Sc. in Management<br />

Applicants holding an M.Sc. in Management<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies from UWI, or a M.Sc. from ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

accredited <strong>University</strong>, where <strong>the</strong> research<br />

component is at least 25% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree<br />

content, and who have attained at least<br />

a B+ average, will be eligible for direct<br />

admission.<br />

2. Applicants with O<strong>the</strong>r Academic<br />

Backgrounds<br />

Such applicants must hold at least a master’s<br />

degree from UWI or ano<strong>the</strong>r accredited<br />

<strong>University</strong> with a B+ average and with an<br />

acceptable level <strong>of</strong> research content in <strong>the</strong><br />

programme pursued.<br />

Depending on <strong>the</strong>ir background, such<br />

applicants may be required to take<br />

additional courses as determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Department Head on <strong>the</strong> recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Admissions Committee, prior to<br />

registration.<br />

Selection Criteria<br />

<strong>The</strong> final selection <strong>of</strong> students for <strong>the</strong> two<br />

categories above will be based on <strong>the</strong> following<br />

criteria:<br />

1. An interview with Admissions Committee<br />

2. Recommendations from M.Sc. or MBA<br />

Programme lecturers<br />

3. Level <strong>of</strong> motivation, as assessed in <strong>the</strong><br />

interview.<br />

4. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional experience, where applicable<br />

5. GMAT scores documenting a minimum <strong>of</strong> 550<br />

total, including 20 in <strong>the</strong> verbal section and<br />

22 in <strong>the</strong> quantitative section, in <strong>the</strong> cases <strong>of</strong><br />

non-UWI international students, who might<br />

also be required to take an ESL Assessment<br />

Test, where appropriate.<br />

enrollment<br />

To ensure adequate student instruction and<br />

supervision, enrollment will be limited to at most<br />

10 students entering <strong>the</strong> programme in any year<br />

across all available disciplines.<br />

Programme <strong>St</strong>ructure and Content<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ph.D. programme is comprised <strong>of</strong> 6 fourcredit<br />

courses and two 5-credit courses plus<br />

a dissertation worth 56 credits for a total <strong>of</strong><br />

90 credits.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents will normally complete <strong>the</strong> Ph.D course<br />

work and dissertation over a four-year period,<br />

and must complete within seven years, while<br />

also participating in instructional development<br />

workshops and contributing to undergraduate<br />

teaching within <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Management<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies. Beginning in <strong>the</strong> third year, students<br />

without teaching experience will be required<br />

to teach two courses each year within <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

area <strong>of</strong> specialisation, under <strong>the</strong> supervision <strong>of</strong><br />

an academic staff member designated by <strong>the</strong><br />

Department Head.<br />

All doctoral students will be required to take a<br />

common body <strong>of</strong> six (6) courses plus two (2)<br />

optional courses to build <strong>the</strong>ir research and<br />

analytical skills and to provide <strong>the</strong> requisite<br />

disciplinary foundation for dissertation research.<br />

non-credit requirements<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents must demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Spanish or<br />

an alternate foreign language, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department Head, and participate in a Business Ethics<br />

seminar and Departmental Research Colloquium.<br />

Comprehensive examination Process<br />

Each candidate will be required to write a Comprehensive<br />

Examination in his or her field at <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

programme course work. <strong>St</strong>udents must pass this exam<br />

before proceeding fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> programme.<br />

Dissertations: Supervision and Process<br />

Each candidate will develop an original research<br />

project and carry it out under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> a<br />

supervising <strong>the</strong>sis faculty committee. <strong>The</strong> committee<br />

will consist <strong>of</strong> a <strong>the</strong>sis supervisor and two readers<br />

drawn from this or any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sister campuses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

U.W.I or from any o<strong>the</strong>r approved <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dissertation will be defended orally, in an open<br />

forum, at its completion.<br />
