T h e f a C u l T Y o f Social Sciences CariBBean CenTre for moneY anD finanCe (CCmf) The Centre evolved out of the previous Regional Programme of Monetary Studies (RPMS), a programme which had served the Caribbean well for the past twenty-seven years. The initial RPMS programme was established in 1968 as a partnership between Caribbean Central Banks, The University of the West Indies and the University of Guyana, to undertake independent research of an empirical and theoretical nature in the areas of money and finance. The CCMF continues to provide credible forums for interaction between practitioners and scholars, while it continues to add to its own voluminous literature on monetary and financial matters. Besides their own research which has been ventilated in various academic forums, the staff (academic and nonacademic) has provided valiant assistance in the publication of our new journal and in the organizing of the Centre’s annual trademark Senior Level Policy Seminar and Annual Monetary Studies Conference which have gained a high reputation in the region. The Centre continues to service the CARICOM Central Bank Governors meetings by providing reports on economic performance in the region. The crisis of the international financial system highlights the timeliness of the centre’s broader focus on financial sector issues, in addition to economic policy issues. The CCMF is actively seeking to engage in a major regional collaborative project on financial risk analysis in the context of growing financial linkages within the Caribbean, in collaboration with CARTAC and other regional institutions. The difficulty of accessing data for regional comparisons is a matter of long standing concern. A CCMF project for establishing a database for such comparisons has been revised to take advantage of regional synergies and to identify information gaps that need to be filled. A third collaborative project for which funding is being sought addresses price formation and trends in inflation, also a matter of urgent concern to the region. In addition, the Centre: • Undertakes economic conferences: • The Senior Policy Seminar, usually held annually, will be held bi-annually in April and September. It pulls together senior policy makers from the private and public sector around seminal policy issues bearing on Caribbean economies and finance • The Annual Monetary Conference held annually in November, constitutes the major conclave of economists within the region • Produces, based on the proceeds of the economic conferences, the Journal of Business, Finance and Economic in Emerging Economics, which is a collaborative effort between the CCMF, the departments of Economics and Management and SALISES • Assists on demand, specific training within Central Banks within the region • Supervises graduate students where appropriate, enrolled at the UWI • Supervises, when appropriate, Summer interns Dr. De lisle Worrell (Director) ms. T h e f a C u l T Y o f Social Sciences inSTiTuTe of GenDer anD DeVeloPmenT STuDieS (iGDS) The Institute has its origins in the work of the Women and Development Studies Groups, UWI, and was established in September 1993. It is regional in scope, with its regional co-ordinating unit located at UWI, Mona, Jamaica, with units on UWI campuses in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. The Institute is committed to a programme of teaching, research and outreach which seeks to question, challenge and understand the social relationship of gender in the Caribbean. The Institute offers a range of interdisciplinary post graduate programmes. These attract a diverse of students who bring different areas of expertise and knowledge to the seminars, courses and research projects. The programmes cater to the multi-faceted needs of the graduate client base and include an advanced postgraduate diploma, an M.Sc. by coursework and research project and a research based M.Phil/ Ph.D. The core graduate courses are: • Feminist Epistemology and Methodology (4 credits) - GEND6102/7101/8101 • Contemporary Feminist Theorizing (4 credits) - GEND6100/7100/8100 • Gender Analysis for Development, Policy and Planning- (4 credits) GEND6103/7102/8102 • Sexualities, Bodies and Power (4 credits) GEND 6104/7103/8103 • Key Issues in Gender and Development in the Caribbean (4 credits) GEND 6105/7105/8105 • Research Design and Methods (4 credits) GEND 6106/7106/8106 Possible electives: • The Philosophy of Gender (GEND 5001/6002/7001/8001) • The Philosophy of Gender in Caribbean Thought (GEND 5002/6003/7002/8002) • Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender in the Anglophone Caribbean (SOCI 5001/6001/7001/8001) • Womenís Writing and Feminists Theory (LITS 6201) • Bioethics (BIOL 6062) • Caribbean Social Problems (SOCI 6004) • Health Sociology (SOCI 6025) • Communication, Culture and Conflict (COMS 6203) • Public Policy (GOVT 6102) page 74 > t h e u n i v e r s i t y o f t h e w e s t i n d i e s – s t . a u g u s t i n e c a m p u s • Social Policy Analysis and Evaluation (SOCI 6001) • Theory and Conceptualisation of Culture (CLTR 6000) • Debates in Caribbean Cultural Identity (CLTR 6010) • Science and Society (EDSC 6002) In addition to proposed electives, the M.Sc. requires a 20,000 word research project; the M.Phil. requires a 50,000 word thesis and the Ph.D requires an 80,000 word thesis An internship and 12,000 word report is an option for MSc students. Pre-requisites: Students wishing to enter a graduate programme may need to complete qualifying courses if they do not have a UWI Minor in Gender Studies OR Gender and Development Studies, a relevant complement of courses or other similar qualification from another university. Qualifying courses would include core theory courses from among the following: • Feminist Theoretical Frameworks –GEND 2203 • Philosophy of Gender I – GEND3501 • Sex, Gender and Society – SOCI3031 • Gender and Development with Reference to the Caribbean –SOCI3039 Other courses relevant for the specific research interest of the student may also be required. The IGDS programme accepts full-time and parttime students. It is intended for a wide range of participants including activists and persons working in governmental and non-governmental organisations. Interested applicants should inquire about the availability of places within the programme. Graduate intakes are normally every two years, however exceptions can be made in individual cases. The graduate programmes at the Institute are designed to provide an integrated, interdisciplinary programme of gender and development studies across faculties and disciplines at The University of the West Indies. They aim to provide graduate students with the skills and the resources through which they can deepen the academic discourse on Caribbean feminism and contribute to the development of an indigenous body of theory, knowledge and research for the Caribbean. This in turn should contribute to an improved quality of life for women and men of the region. The Diploma offers students a more in-depth understanding of a range of modern techniques and an enhanced capacity to address issues of gender and development in a globalizing world. The M.Sc. is a two year degree providing senior professionals with a range of modern techniques for understanding and addressing developmental issues. The M.Phil. and Ph.D degrees are designed to enhance research and analytical skills in order to produce scholars, policy makers and activists capable of developing a body of gender based knowledge and research on the Caribbean Research students who register for the M.Phil. degree may seek to upgrade to the Ph.D. degree. A research student works in his/her chosen field of research under the guidance of a supervisor who has substantial expertise and experience in the field. Candidates may select research topics from the following areas, but are not limited to these: • Gender, Science and Technology (with a focus on the Environment and Water) • Gender and Sexuality • Men and Masculinities • Gender-based Differentials in Educational Performance • The Making of Feminisms in the Caribbean • Gender and Caribbean Iconography • Women, Gender and Development • Feminist Theory and Epistemology • Gender and Health • Gender and Caribbean Historiography • Women, Gender and Caribbean Literature Students who undertake postgraduate work at IGDS benefit from guidance in their research by competent, well trained and highly regarded academics. They are given opportunities to establish linkages with national, regional and international institutions concerned with Feminist scholarship and Gender Studies. Candidates will leave IGDS having acquired the skills that allow them to carry out research, provide advisory services, influence policy directions and assist with capacity building in national and global institutions.
