master <strong>of</strong> arts (m.a.) Spanish<br />

This programme targets students who hold a B.A. in Spanish from <strong>The</strong> UWI or a valid equivalent<br />

degree from ano<strong>the</strong>r university. Additionally, students must have passed at least 4 courses in<br />

Hispanic Literature in years II and III <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> B.A. programme, all at or above <strong>the</strong> ‘B’ grade. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

who do not satisfy <strong>the</strong> requirements will be allowed to take a qualifying examination. It is a parttime<br />

programme and students are required to complete it in a maximum <strong>of</strong> three calendar years.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents are required to complete 4 semester courses in Hispanic Literature, 2 year-long courses<br />

and a research paper.<br />

master <strong>of</strong> fine arts (mfa) Creative Writing – Prose fiction<br />

<strong>The</strong> MFA Creative Writing – Prose Fiction provides, for established writers without certification and<br />

prospective writers already holding a first degree (in any field), a <strong>postgraduate</strong> course <strong>of</strong> study that<br />

will lead to an M.F.A. degree to be awarded on completion <strong>of</strong> a manuscript <strong>of</strong> fiction. <strong>The</strong> objectives<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree are:<br />

• to award certification for established and prospective writers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region;<br />

• to encourage and develop home-grown creative sensibilities in literary discourse;<br />

• to reduce <strong>the</strong> need for overseas <strong>postgraduate</strong> qualification in Creative Writing;<br />

• to promote and support literary scholarship in <strong>the</strong> region.<br />

master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (m.Phil.) and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Ph.D.) linguistics<br />

<strong>The</strong> norm for admission to <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. in Linguistics is a First or Second Class degree in Linguistics or an<br />

M.A. in <strong>the</strong> same. All students without a higher degree are required to pursue a core <strong>of</strong> coursework to<br />

expand and streng<strong>the</strong>n disciplinary knowledge acquired at <strong>the</strong> undergraduate level. After completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> this, students are required to complete a reading field guided by <strong>the</strong>ir supervisor and assessed by<br />

a seminar paper and annotated bibliography before proceeding to <strong>the</strong>ir dissertation research.<br />

master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (m.Phil.) and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Ph.D.) literatures in english, french<br />

or Spanish<br />

<strong>The</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Ph.D.) Literatures in English, French<br />

OR Spanish are <strong>of</strong>fered out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts. <strong>St</strong>udents may be required to take<br />

a course in Methods <strong>of</strong> Research and Literary Scholarship. Prospective students must ensure that<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir topic <strong>of</strong> research is clearly defined and that <strong>the</strong>re is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faculty that can ably<br />

supervise <strong>the</strong>ir research.<br />

master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (m.Phil.) and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (PhD) in<br />

human Communication <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

A graduate programme in human communication <strong>of</strong>fers an opportunity to explore <strong>the</strong> linguistic and<br />

non-linguistic forces that influence and shape human communication. In thought and in expression,<br />

<strong>the</strong> need to communicate assumes form and substance. <strong>St</strong>udy and research in human communication<br />

in <strong>the</strong> humanities and education disciplines can provide avenues for <strong>the</strong> interdisciplinary exploration<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature, purpose and use <strong>of</strong> communication in classrooms, communities, <strong>the</strong> workplace and<br />

within <strong>the</strong> wider ambit <strong>of</strong> human and social interaction.<br />

<strong>The</strong> graduate programme is designed to provide candidates with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical understandings and<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human communication discipline to critically explore and reflect upon <strong>the</strong> issues<br />

and questions that emerge out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> need to understand, negotiate and participate in <strong>the</strong> human<br />

communication interactions characterized by verbal and nonverbal exchanges. <strong>The</strong> programme focuses<br />

on <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> specific competences and specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes for:<br />

• <strong>The</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional use and application <strong>of</strong> human communication <strong>the</strong>ory and practice in a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> fields in <strong>the</strong> M.A. stream and,<br />

• <strong>The</strong> investigation <strong>of</strong> human communication problems and challenges and <strong>the</strong> creation and<br />

documentation <strong>of</strong> new understandings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature and use <strong>of</strong> human communication in <strong>the</strong> M.<br />

Phil. stream.<br />
