informaTion on Scholarships, Grants and Studentships Scholarships, Grants and Studentships The University awards several scholarships to full-time postgraduate students per year. The following postgraduate scholarships and bursaries are provided by other donors and are awarded according to specific criteria agreed upon with the donors: uWi Postgraduate Scholarship For students pursuing research degrees on a full-time basis uWi Scholarships Graduates of the UWI and West Indian graduates of any approved university and international students are eligible for UWI scholarships. Only full-time students are considered for these awards. Awards are offered annually. Awards can be granted for an M. Phil degree and two or three years for a Ph.D. The holder of an award who is a candidate for an M. Phil but who is allowed to transfer to the Ph.D. will have his award extended for one additional year. Other scholarships are administered on behalf of donors according to their terms of reference. Graduates with First and Upper Second Class Honours are eligible but the former are given first priority. As agreed by Senate, priority is given to students pursuing higher degrees through research. Most University awards are funded by the University Grants Committee. The value of the award if presently TT $60,000 per annum. Scholarships for non-nationals – Campus Contributing Countries Non-nationals from Campus Contributing countries i.e. Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize , British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent who have been awarded scholarships will be required to send an undertaking from their Government advising that they would meet the economic cost of tuition. In the absence of this, the full economic cost will be met from the Scholarship grant. Only Trinidadian and Jamaican students who have been awarded scholarships will not be required to pay tuition and examination fees but other compulsory fees will be deducted from the award before quarterly instalments are calculated. Scholarships for international Students International students who have been awarded a scholarship are required to pay tuition, examination fees and other compulsory fees and this sum will be deducted from the award before quarterly instalments are calculated. non-uWi Scholarships There are several other graduate scholarships available, some of which are administered by the UWI. These are awarded according to the specific criteria developed by the donors. Those currently available are listed below: SCholarShiPS aVailaBle for m.SC. / m.a. STuDenTS Central Bank of Trinidad & Tobago Scholarship: De la rue Scholarship The scholarship is tenable at the St. Augustine Campus of The University of the West Indies for a maximum period of two (2) academic years. The award will primarily cover the cost of books, materials and tuition with the balance being devoted to subsistence. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:- (i) Be a national of Trinidad and Tobago (ii) Be pursuing full-time postgraduate study in the field of Economics (M.Sc./M.Phil/Ph.D.) (Preference shall be granted to applicants who are pursuing economics with specialisations in monetaryeconomics, financial economics, finance, public finances, international trade, regional integration, energy economics or development economics.) informaTion on Scholarships, Grants and Studentships BP Trinidad and Tobago Gordon ramjattan Scholarship (1 scholarship) This scholarship is only available at present for the 2009/10 academic year. The candidate would be selected by the Department based on performance in the Semester 1 University Examinations. The value of the award is US$10,000 per annum for a full-time student in the Faculty of Engineering and reading the M.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering or M.Sc. in Reservoir Engineering. George higgins Scholarship (1 scholarship) This scholarship is available to a full-time M.Sc. Petroleum Engineering student. The candidate would be selected by the Department based on performance in the Semester 1 University Examinations. The value of the award is TT$9,000.00. GDf SueZ Bursaries Eight (8) Bursaries have been provided by GDF SUEZ to assist in promoting one of the University’s primary objectives which involves preparing a distinctive UWI graduate for the 21st century. GDF SUEZ wishes to foster a climate of academic excellence and facilitate student interchange between the Campuses of the University. The sum of each bursary is TT$15,000.00 and applications are open to only Trinidad and Tobago nationals. Two (2) bursaries would be awarded to each of the following Faculties for students commencing Year I of the following Taught Masters programmes: Science & agriculture • M.Sc. Computer Science • m.Sc. Crop Science engineering • M.Sc. Civil With Environmental engineering • M.Sc. Construction Engineering & management humanities & education • M.A. Spanish • M.A. English Language Social Sciences • M.Sc. Government • M.Sc. Sociology page 80 > t h e u n i v e r s i t y o f t h e w e s t i n d i e s – s t . a u g u s t i n e c a m p u s The selection criteria would be based on (i) the students’ class of degree/GPA i.e. (3.00 – 3.59 – Upper Second Class Honours or 3.60 and above – First Class Honours) (ii) Two (2) referees’ reports and (iii) Be a first year postgraduate student commencing Year I of the degree. Scholarships available for m.Phil./ Ph.D. Students elsa Goveia Scholarship (i) Applicants must be graduates of The University of the West Indies, University of Guyana or another Caribbean University. (ii) Two (2) scholarships to be awarded as follows: (a) To persons currently registered fulltime for the M.Phil. or Ph.D. degree in Caribbean History or who have applied for full-time admission to such a programme for the particular academic year. (b) For studies leading to the M.Phil./ Ph.D. degree in the areas of Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies and Gender Studies. (iii) Scholarships will be tenable at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine for two (2) years with the possibility of an extension to a third year for Ph.D. candidates only. (iv) The value of the scholarship is TT$60,000.00 per annum eric Williams memorial Scholarship One scholarship for CARICOM nationals who are pursuing full-time studies for an M.Phil. or Ph.D. degree in Caribbean History, Caribbean Economic Development or Caribbean Politics. The Scholarship will be awarded for two (2) years for the (M.Phil.) or three (3) years for the (Ph.D.) and subject to satisfactory academic progress. The annual value of the scholarship is TT$60,000 per annum. Yara Graduate Scholarships Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the YARA Trinidad Limited Scholarship to be awarded at either the M.Phil or Ph.D. levels in Soil Science in the Department of Food Production. The award is worth US$10,000.00 per annum for two years and will be offered from September 2008. The successful candidate will have as his/her research focus “Evaluation and application of modern diagnostic techniques in plant nutrition and fertilizer management in important food crops of Trinidad and Tobago”. Candidates must hold a B.Sc. in Agriculture or related disciplines from a reputable university and also satisfy standard requirements for entry into graduate research programmes of The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. errol Barrow memorial Scholarship Two Scholarships per annum to citizens of the Commonwealth Caribbean who are UWI Graduates with First Class Honours degrees, for study relevant to the economic and social development of the region. Sir frank Worrell Scholarship Five scholarships per annum to Caricom Nationals in any field of research. In addition, many project grants include funds for postgraduate training in the particular programme advertisement Applications for scholarships are invited by means of advertisements issued by the Marketing and Communications Office who post these ads in the local newspapers and on the E-News. It must be noted that not all of the above awards are offered each academic year as the offerings are also dependent on donor organisations. The notices, are posted on the Graduate Studies website, www.sta.uwi.edu/postgrad , and University’s Notice Boards, advertised on the local intranet and sent via hard copy to all Departments in May of each year. The deadline for applications each year is June 30. www.sta.uwi.edu
