Scholarships, Grants and <strong>St</strong>udentships<br />

BP Trinidad and Tobago<br />

Gordon ramjattan Scholarship<br />

(1 scholarship)<br />

This scholarship is only available at present<br />

for <strong>the</strong> 2009/10 academic year. <strong>The</strong> candidate<br />

would be selected by <strong>the</strong> Department based<br />

on performance in <strong>the</strong> Semester 1 <strong>University</strong><br />

Examinations. <strong>The</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award is<br />

US$10,000 per annum for a full-time student in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Engineering and reading <strong>the</strong> M.Sc.<br />

in Petroleum Engineering or M.Sc. in Reservoir<br />

Engineering.<br />

George higgins Scholarship<br />

(1 scholarship)<br />

This scholarship is available to a full-time M.Sc.<br />

Petroleum Engineering student. <strong>The</strong> candidate<br />

would be selected by <strong>the</strong> Department based<br />

on performance in <strong>the</strong> Semester 1 <strong>University</strong><br />

Examinations. <strong>The</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award is<br />

TT$9,000.00.<br />

GDf SueZ Bursaries<br />

Eight (8) Bursaries have been provided by<br />

GDF SUEZ to assist in promoting one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>’s primary objectives which involves<br />

preparing a distinctive UWI graduate for <strong>the</strong><br />

21st century. GDF SUEZ wishes to foster a<br />

climate <strong>of</strong> academic excellence and facilitate<br />

student interchange between <strong>the</strong> Campuses <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> each bursary is TT$15,000.00 and<br />

applications are open to only Trinidad and<br />

Tobago nationals. Two (2) bursaries would be<br />

awarded to each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following Faculties for<br />

students commencing Year I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following<br />

Taught Masters programmes:<br />

<strong>The</strong> selection criteria would be based on (i) <strong>the</strong><br />

students’ class <strong>of</strong> degree/GPA i.e. (3.00 – 3.59 –<br />

Upper Second Class Honours or 3.60 and above –<br />

First Class Honours) (ii) Two (2) referees’ reports<br />

and (iii) Be a first year <strong>postgraduate</strong> student<br />

commencing Year I <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> degree.<br />

Scholarships available for m.Phil./<br />

Ph.D. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

elsa Goveia Scholarship<br />

(i) Applicants must be graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Guyana or ano<strong>the</strong>r Caribbean<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

(ii) Two (2) scholarships to be awarded as<br />

follows:<br />

(a) To persons currently registered fulltime<br />

for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. or Ph.D. degree<br />

in Caribbean History or who have<br />

applied for full-time admission to<br />

such a programme for <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

academic year.<br />

(b) For studies leading to <strong>the</strong> M.Phil./<br />

Ph.D. degree in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong><br />

Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies and Gender <strong>St</strong>udies.<br />

(iii) Scholarships will be tenable at <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, <strong>St</strong>.<br />

Augustine for two (2) years with <strong>the</strong><br />

possibility <strong>of</strong> an extension to a third<br />

year for Ph.D. candidates only.<br />

(iv) <strong>The</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship is<br />

TT$60,000.00 per annum<br />

eric Williams memorial Scholarship<br />

One scholarship for CARICOM nationals who<br />

are pursuing full-time studies for an M.Phil. or<br />

Ph.D. degree in Caribbean History, Caribbean<br />

Economic Development or Caribbean Politics.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Scholarship will be awarded for two (2)<br />

years for <strong>the</strong> (M.Phil.) or three (3) years for <strong>the</strong><br />

(Ph.D.) and subject to satisfactory academic<br />

progress. <strong>The</strong> annual value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship is<br />

TT$60,000 per annum.<br />

Yara Graduate Scholarships<br />

Applications are invited from suitably qualified<br />

candidates for <strong>the</strong> YARA Trinidad Limited<br />

Scholarship to be awarded at ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> M.Phil<br />

or Ph.D. levels in Soil Science in <strong>the</strong> Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Food Production.<br />

<strong>The</strong> award is worth US$10,000.00 per annum for<br />

two years and will be <strong>of</strong>fered from September<br />

2008.<br />

<strong>The</strong> successful candidate will have as his/her<br />

research focus “Evaluation and application <strong>of</strong><br />

modern diagnostic techniques in plant nutrition<br />

and fertilizer management in important food<br />

crops <strong>of</strong> Trinidad and Tobago”.<br />

Candidates must hold a B.Sc. in Agriculture or<br />

related disciplines from a reputable university<br />

and also satisfy standard requirements for entry<br />

into graduate research programmes <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, <strong>St</strong>. Augustine.<br />

errol Barrow memorial Scholarship<br />

Two Scholarships per annum to citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Commonwealth Caribbean who are UWI Graduates<br />

with First Class Honours degrees, for study<br />

relevant to <strong>the</strong> economic and social development<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.<br />

Sir frank Worrell Scholarship<br />

Five scholarships per annum to Caricom Nationals<br />

in any field <strong>of</strong> research.<br />

In addition, many project grants include funds<br />

for <strong>postgraduate</strong> training in <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

programme<br />

Applications for scholarships are invited by<br />

means <strong>of</strong> advertisements issued by <strong>the</strong> Marketing<br />

and Communications Office who post <strong>the</strong>se ads<br />

in <strong>the</strong> local newspapers and on <strong>the</strong> E-News. It<br />

must be noted that not all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above awards<br />

are <strong>of</strong>fered each academic year as <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ferings<br />

are also dependent on donor organisations.<br />

<strong>The</strong> notices, are posted on <strong>the</strong> Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies<br />

website, www.sta.uwi.edu/postgrad , and<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Notice Boards, advertised on <strong>the</strong><br />

local intranet and sent via hard copy to all<br />

Departments in May <strong>of</strong> each year. <strong>The</strong> deadline<br />

for applications each year is June 30.<br />
