<strong>The</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Medical Sciences consists <strong>of</strong><br />

Schools <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Veterinary Medicine,<br />

Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Advanced Nursing<br />

Education and is accredited by <strong>the</strong> Caribbean<br />

Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine<br />

and O<strong>the</strong>r Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions (CAAM).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Faculty is committed to <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

excellence in health research. While its research<br />

priorities are determined by local and regional<br />

needs, its perspective remains international<br />

through <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> productive<br />

research collaborations with renowned research<br />

institutions across <strong>the</strong> world. In so doing, <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Medical Sciences brings developed<br />

world technology to solve regional health<br />

problems as defined by regional governments<br />

entry requirements<br />

DiPloma ProGrammeS<br />

Diploma in emergency medicine<br />

Candidates seeking entry to <strong>the</strong> Diploma<br />

programme in Emergency Medicine must be<br />

graduates <strong>of</strong> a <strong>University</strong> or Medical School<br />

approved by <strong>the</strong> Medical Board <strong>of</strong> Trinidad<br />

and Tobago. In addition candidates must have<br />

completed at least one (1) year in Emergency<br />

Medicine at an approved Department, and at<br />

least twelve (12) months in acute specialties<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r than Emergency Medicine.<br />

Diploma in family medicine<br />

Candidates seeking entry to <strong>the</strong> Diploma<br />

programme in Family Medicine must possess an<br />

MB.BS degree or an equivalent qualification from<br />

an approved university. In addition, applicants<br />

must have at least one year’s clinical working<br />

experience preferably in Primary Care.<br />

m.Sc. ProGrammeS<br />

m.Sc. in emergency medicine<br />

Candidates seeking entry to <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. programme<br />

in Emergency Medicine must be graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Diploma programme in Emergency Medicine. In<br />

addition candidates must have completed at<br />

least one (1) year in Emergency Medicine at<br />

an approved Department, and have additional<br />

experience in acute specialties o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

Emergency Medicine.<br />

m.Sc. in family medicine<br />

Candidates seeking entry to <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. programme<br />

in Family Medicine must be graduates <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Diploma programme in Family Medicine.<br />

Candidates should also be medical practitioners<br />

who have qualified from a recognised <strong>University</strong><br />

or Medical School and are registered for practice<br />

within <strong>the</strong> country in which training occurs.<br />

m.Sc. Clinical Psychology<br />

Candidates seeking entry to <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. programme<br />

in Clinical Psychology should possess a Bachelors<br />

degree in Psychology or related field from a<br />

recognised university with at least second class<br />

honours. Candidates must demonstrate aptitude<br />

in research / computer skills and have taken a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> core psychology courses including<br />

Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology,<br />

<strong>St</strong>atistics and Experimental Psychology.<br />

m.Sc. advanced nursing<br />

<strong>The</strong> Master in Advanced Nursing (MSN) programme<br />

is available to general, psychiatric and midwifery<br />

trained nurses who are (i) registered / licensed<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir current jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> practice, (ii)<br />

can verify first registration / licensure if it is<br />

different from that which is presently held,<br />

and (ii) qualify for registration/licensure in<br />

<strong>the</strong> region served by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong><br />

<strong>Indies</strong>. Candidates should have a total <strong>of</strong> three<br />

years clinical experience post registration /<br />

licensure. Time spent on educational programmes<br />

is not included in this three-year practice<br />

requirement. Candidates should also hold an<br />

undergraduate degree with not less than a<br />

second class honours OR hold a graduate degree<br />

OR hold approved technical and/or pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

qualification(s) awarded by an approved body<br />

and approved by this <strong>University</strong> and currently<br />

holds a position comparable for <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> degree sought within <strong>the</strong> Regulations, all<br />

attempts will be made to facilitate <strong>the</strong> goals <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> individual student, pr<strong>of</strong>essional and career<br />

expectations, and employment realities.<br />

m.S.c. Public health<br />

To be admitted to <strong>the</strong> prescribed course <strong>of</strong><br />

study for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Public Health<br />

(MPH) candidates must ei<strong>the</strong>r be registered<br />

medical practitioners, dental surgeons, or<br />

veterinary surgeons, with at least three years<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional experience preferably in Public<br />

Health after successfully completing <strong>the</strong> final<br />

examination in <strong>the</strong>ir discipline; be graduates<br />

<strong>of</strong> an approved university with at least three<br />

years <strong>of</strong> relevant practical experience; hold an<br />

approved technical or pr<strong>of</strong>essional qualification<br />

awarded by an approved body and approved by<br />

this university and have had at least five years<br />

relevant practical experience; or have in <strong>the</strong><br />

opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, o<strong>the</strong>r qualifications<br />

<strong>of</strong> special relevance to <strong>the</strong> course and in <strong>the</strong><br />

opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, have had at least five<br />

years <strong>of</strong> relevant practical experience.<br />
