The Faculty of Medical Sciences consists of
Schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine,
Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Advanced Nursing
Education and is accredited by the Caribbean
Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine
and Other Health Professions (CAAM).
The Faculty is committed to the development of
excellence in health research. While its research
priorities are determined by local and regional
needs, its perspective remains international
through the development of productive
research collaborations with renowned research
institutions across the world. In so doing, the
Faculty of Medical Sciences brings developed
world technology to solve regional health
problems as defined by regional governments
and agencies.
entry requirements
DiPloma ProGrammeS
Diploma in emergency medicine
Candidates seeking entry to the Diploma
programme in Emergency Medicine must be
graduates of a University or Medical School
approved by the Medical Board of Trinidad
and Tobago. In addition candidates must have
completed at least one (1) year in Emergency
Medicine at an approved Department, and at
least twelve (12) months in acute specialties
other than Emergency Medicine.
Diploma in family medicine
Candidates seeking entry to the Diploma
programme in Family Medicine must possess an
MB.BS degree or an equivalent qualification from
an approved university. In addition, applicants
must have at least one year’s clinical working
experience preferably in Primary Care.
m.Sc. ProGrammeS
m.Sc. in emergency medicine
Candidates seeking entry to the M.Sc. programme
in Emergency Medicine must be graduates of the
Diploma programme in Emergency Medicine. In
addition candidates must have completed at
least one (1) year in Emergency Medicine at
an approved Department, and have additional
experience in acute specialties other than
Emergency Medicine.
m.Sc. in family medicine
Candidates seeking entry to the M.Sc. programme
in Family Medicine must be graduates of
the Diploma programme in Family Medicine.
Candidates should also be medical practitioners
who have qualified from a recognised University
or Medical School and are registered for practice
within the country in which training occurs.
m.Sc. Clinical Psychology
Candidates seeking entry to the M.Sc. programme
in Clinical Psychology should possess a Bachelors
degree in Psychology or related field from a
recognised university with at least second class
honours. Candidates must demonstrate aptitude
in research / computer skills and have taken a
number of core psychology courses including
Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology,
Statistics and Experimental Psychology.
m.Sc. advanced nursing
The Master in Advanced Nursing (MSN) programme
is available to general, psychiatric and midwifery
trained nurses who are (i) registered / licensed
in their current jurisdiction of practice, (ii)
can verify first registration / licensure if it is
different from that which is presently held,
and (ii) qualify for registration/licensure in
the region served by the University of the West
Indies. Candidates should have a total of three
years clinical experience post registration /
licensure. Time spent on educational programmes
is not included in this three-year practice
requirement. Candidates should also hold an
undergraduate degree with not less than a
second class honours OR hold a graduate degree
OR hold approved technical and/or professional
qualification(s) awarded by an approved body
and approved by this University and currently
holds a position comparable for the area of
the degree sought within the Regulations, all
attempts will be made to facilitate the goals of
the individual student, professional and career
expectations, and employment realities.
m.S.c. Public health
To be admitted to the prescribed course of
study for the degree of Master of Public Health
(MPH) candidates must either be registered
medical practitioners, dental surgeons, or
veterinary surgeons, with at least three years
professional experience preferably in Public
Health after successfully completing the final
examination in their discipline; be graduates
of an approved university with at least three
years of relevant practical experience; hold an
approved technical or professional qualification
awarded by an approved body and approved by
this university and have had at least five years
relevant practical experience; or have in the
opinion of the University, other qualifications
of special relevance to the course and in the
opinion of the University, have had at least five
years of relevant practical experience.
