How to Apply<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents with<br />

Disabilities<br />

Applications from persons with physical<br />

disabilities are welcomed. It is <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

policy to consider <strong>the</strong>ir applications on <strong>the</strong><br />

same academic grounds as those <strong>of</strong> all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

applicants. Special facilities like elevators, ramps<br />

and bathrooms are available for wheelchair<br />

users.<br />

It is, however, helpful for <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> to<br />

know in advance about <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> disability<br />

or handicap so that it may <strong>of</strong>fer advice on what<br />

facilities – or special treatment where necessary<br />

– may be available.<br />

Specially<br />

admitted <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

You are eligible for special admission if you fall<br />

into one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following categories:<br />

• You are registered at ano<strong>the</strong>r university<br />

and wish to follow courses at UWI by<br />

special arrangement for credits at your own<br />

university.<br />

• You are sponsored by your Government or<br />

employer to read certain courses, not for<br />

credit toward a university qualification,<br />

under a special arrangement.<br />

• You are a graduate from UWI and wish to<br />

pursue (a) particular course(s) to:<br />

• equip yourself for a particular job;<br />

• increase your efficiency in <strong>the</strong> performance<br />

<strong>of</strong> a job;<br />

• satisfy entry requirements to a Programme<br />

in this or in ano<strong>the</strong>r institution;<br />

• update or improve your knowledge in a<br />

subject.<br />

Specially admitted students are permitted to<br />

write examinations in <strong>the</strong> courses for which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have registered and will be charged a per<br />

credit fee.<br />

If you wish to attend UWI for a period <strong>of</strong> study<br />

not leading to any degree or diploma you may<br />

seek admission as an “occasional student.”<br />

You must be recommended by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Department whose lectures, tutorials and or<br />

laboratory classes you wish to attend and you<br />

will be charged a per-credit fee. Occasional<br />

students may not write examinations in <strong>the</strong><br />

course(s) for which <strong>the</strong>y are registered.<br />

Visiting <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> welcomes applications from<br />

students who wish to access courses without<br />

registering for a particular graduate programme,<br />

or who wish to conduct specific research in<br />

connection with <strong>the</strong>ir registration at ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

institution, or to work with a particular member<br />

<strong>of</strong> this <strong>University</strong>’s academic staff.<br />

If you are interested in undertaking such a<br />

programme <strong>of</strong> study which does not lead to<br />

any formal UWI qualification ei<strong>the</strong>r as a fulltime<br />

or part-time student, please contact <strong>the</strong><br />

appropriate department.<br />

english language<br />

requirement<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s tuition and examinations<br />

are given in <strong>the</strong> English language. If your native<br />

language is not English, or if you come from<br />

a country where English is not <strong>the</strong> primary<br />

language used in education, you must provide<br />

evidence that your ability in <strong>the</strong> various skills<br />

<strong>of</strong> English meets <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s requirements,<br />

by including with your application details <strong>of</strong> any<br />

recognised English Language qualifications and<br />

<strong>of</strong> experience in using English. <strong>The</strong> most usual<br />

qualification is <strong>the</strong> Test <strong>of</strong> English as a Foreign<br />

Language (TOEFL) which is <strong>of</strong>fered twelve times<br />

a year at centres throughout <strong>the</strong> world. It is<br />

recommended that when you apply for entry to<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Indies</strong>, you also make<br />

arrangements to take <strong>the</strong> TOEFL and request that<br />

your score be sent directly to <strong>the</strong> School for<br />

Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies & Research. Information on <strong>the</strong><br />

Visas<br />

If you are coming to Trinidad & Tobago you<br />

must have a valid passport. At present, British<br />

Commonwealth citizens entering Trinidad<br />

& Tobago do not require visas; nei<strong>the</strong>r do<br />

nationals <strong>of</strong> Germany, Turkey, Switzerland,<br />

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Israel,<br />

France, Brazil and Colombia. Visas are required<br />

by all o<strong>the</strong>r overseas nationals and you must<br />

make arrangements in your home country for a<br />

student visa.<br />
