T h e f a C u l T Y o f Humanities & Education School of Humanities DeParTmenT of hiSTorY The Department offers postgraduate programmes leading to the M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. The M.A. is based mainly on coursework, while the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees are based mainly on theses. The Department has an Archaeology Centre that focuses on research in Amerindian culture and history. Postgraduate students can also get involved in the Oral & Pictorial Records Project (OPReP), which is a collaborative project between the Department and the Main Library. The OPReP is a project, which involves the systematic collection of oral history testimony and pictorial records relevant to the history of Trinidad & Tobago. Master of Arts (M.A.) History For the M.A. (History), students are required to read three year-long courses and write a research paper between 10,000 and 15,000 words. Each course is examined by means of coursework assessment and a final examination. The research paper carries 25% of the total mark for the programme. The programme is presently offered as a part-time programme, spread over two years, with students being admitted at the start of every second academic year. The main objective of the M.A. programme in History is to offer specialised training to teachers in the higher levels of secondary schools and other interested persons. It also acts as an excellent preparation for the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) History Students of the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, except those who have already taken the M.A. programme in History, will be required to pass either Theory and Methods of History, or Historiography with special reference to the Caribbean, which are all year-long courses also offered for the M.A. students. The programme includes the presentation of a dissertation on an approved subject, generally involving original work, but worthy of publication at the Ph.D. level. Students are also admitted to pursue full-time or part-time research for M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Conference Interpreting. Research degrees, M.Phil. and Ph.D., are available in all disciplines for which there are majors, and in Cultural Studies. All students entering the M.Phil. programme are now required to do at least one graduate course in research methods. Students must also fulfill the requirement of a postgraduate seminar presentation at least once per year. master of arts (m.a.) applied linguistics This programme is complete in itself but also feeds into the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes by providing two years of concentrated coursework. The target group for this programme is persons involved in education, in particular language education. The aim of the programme is to equip students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to enable them to teach English to a variety of learners. The programme includes a course in language and learning disabilities as well as education courses in curriculum and assessment. Students must complete seven semester-long courses, a reading field and a research paper. master of arts (m.a) in english language The purpose of this programme is to equip secondary and post-secondary teachers, as well as other interested persons, with the capacity to critically analyse the structures of the English language at all linguistic levels and to evaluate accurately the changing role of English language varieties in the Caribbean region as well as on a global scale. It necessarily equips students with the capacity to critically analyse Caribbean vernacular language varieties and to accurately compare them with Standard English. They should be able to design courses to cater to diverse groups of learners whose native varieties may differ from Standard English in a range of ways. The Programme specifically targets secondary and post-secondary teachers of English as well as teacher trainers, programme and course developers and scholars of the English language in all its aspects. It would be equally applicable to students throughout the Caribbean region as it would in Trinidad and Tobago. It consists of eight (8) graduate courses and one (1) Research project which is to be an Action Research endeavour to be undertaken, whenever possible, in the classroom context. master of arts (m.a) human Communication Studies The graduate programme is designed to provide candidates with the theoretical understandings and methods of the human communication discipline to critically explore and reflect upon the issues and questions that emerge out of the need to understand, negotiate and participate in the human communication interactions characterized by verbal and nonverbal exchanges. The programme focuses on the development of specific competences and specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes for the professional use and application of human communication theory and practice in a variety of fields in the M.A. stream. master of arts (m.a.) literatures in english This programme offers advanced training in the nature, theory and practice of literature to students with a first degree (at least Lower Second Class Honours) in the subject area, from a recognised university. The programme is currently only offered part-time over two academic years. Students will be required to take 8 semester courses and a direct reading field in the student’s research area. In the final semester, students will be required to submit a research paper of between 10,000 to 15,000 words. www.sta.uwi.edu
