DeParTmenT <strong>of</strong> hiSTorY<br />

<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>postgraduate</strong> programmes leading to <strong>the</strong> M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. <strong>The</strong> M.A. is based mainly on coursework, while <strong>the</strong> M.Phil.<br />

and Ph.D. degrees are based mainly on <strong>the</strong>ses. <strong>The</strong> Department has an Archaeology Centre that focuses on research in Amerindian culture and history.<br />

Postgraduate students can also get involved in <strong>the</strong> Oral & Pictorial Records Project (OPReP), which is a collaborative project between <strong>the</strong> Department and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Main Library. <strong>The</strong> OPReP is a project, which involves <strong>the</strong> systematic collection <strong>of</strong> oral history testimony and pictorial records relevant to <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><br />

Trinidad & Tobago.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts (M.A.) History<br />

For <strong>the</strong> M.A. (History), students are required to read three year-long courses and write a research paper between 10,000 and 15,000 words. Each course is<br />

examined by means <strong>of</strong> coursework assessment and a final examination. <strong>The</strong> research paper carries 25% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total mark for <strong>the</strong> programme. <strong>The</strong> programme<br />

is presently <strong>of</strong>fered as a part-time programme, spread over two years, with students being admitted at <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> every second academic year. <strong>The</strong> main<br />

objective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M.A. programme in History is to <strong>of</strong>fer specialised training to teachers in <strong>the</strong> higher levels <strong>of</strong> secondary schools and o<strong>the</strong>r interested persons.<br />

It also acts as an excellent preparation for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Ph.D.) History<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, except those who have already taken <strong>the</strong> M.A. programme in History, will be required to pass ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>The</strong>ory<br />

and Methods <strong>of</strong> History, or Historiography with special reference to <strong>the</strong> Caribbean, which are all year-long courses also <strong>of</strong>fered for <strong>the</strong> M.A. students. <strong>The</strong><br />

programme includes <strong>the</strong> presentation <strong>of</strong> a dissertation on an approved subject, generally involving original work, but worthy <strong>of</strong> publication at <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. level.<br />

<strong>The</strong> M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes involve in-depth research into a proposed area <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
