How to Apply<br />

aPPliCaTion ProCeDure<br />

Who is eligible for entry ?<br />

To be eligible for consideration for entry to study<br />

for a <strong>postgraduate</strong> degree, candidates must be:<br />

• Graduates <strong>of</strong> an approved university;<br />

• In possession <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r suitable pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

qualifications and experience approved by<br />

Senate on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board<br />

for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies & Research.<br />

In order to be eligible for <strong>postgraduate</strong> study,<br />

you will be required to have, in most cases, a<br />

Second Class Honours degree in <strong>the</strong> relevant<br />

or an analogous subject area, or an equivalent<br />

qualification. You will also be expected to satisfy<br />

<strong>the</strong> particular Faculty/Department requirements<br />

before beginning graduate study.<br />

Applicants wishing to register for a Ph.D. degree<br />

who do not have a Master’s degree by research<br />

or one which included a research component<br />

<strong>of</strong> at least 25% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> total credit weighting<br />

and for which <strong>the</strong> applicant achieved at least a<br />

B+ average or its equivalent, will be required<br />

to register for <strong>the</strong> M.Phil. in <strong>the</strong> first instance.<br />

You may be allowed to upgrade your registration<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. level, subject to satisfying certain<br />

stated criteria.<br />

how do i apply to uWi ?<br />

Prospective students can apply online at www.<br />

sta.uwi.edu/postgrad . All instructions are available<br />

on <strong>the</strong> web site and on-line applications<br />

attract no application fees. Supporting documents<br />

(birth certificate, university transcript(s)<br />

and references) must be submitted to this<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice before <strong>the</strong> final closing date. Applications<br />

sent without <strong>the</strong>se documents will not<br />

be considered.<br />

If you are not a UWI graduate, you must request<br />

that your degree granting institution forward a<br />

copy <strong>of</strong> your transcript to <strong>the</strong> School for Graduate<br />

<strong>St</strong>udies & Research no later than February 15th<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding <strong>the</strong> academic year in which<br />

you wish to begin studies. Your application will<br />

not be given consideration until your transcript<br />

is received.<br />

When should i send in my application?<br />

Applications should reach <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> by<br />

January 31st <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academic year in which candidates<br />

wish to register. <strong>The</strong> site is opened for<br />

on-line application from November for persons<br />

wishing to commence study at <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

next academic year in September (Semester I).<br />

M.Phil. or Ph.D. applicants wishing to commence<br />

study in Semester I (September) or Semester II<br />

(January) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new academic year must submit<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir on-line applications by April 30 or September<br />

30 respectively <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding academic<br />

year in which <strong>the</strong>y wish to begin studies.<br />

Who reviews my application?<br />

All applications for admission are subject to <strong>the</strong><br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department concerned,<br />

and to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Campus Committee<br />

for Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies & Research or <strong>the</strong> Board for<br />

Graduate <strong>St</strong>udies and Research as appropriate.<br />

When will i get a response?<br />

You will be informed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> your<br />

application as soon as a decision is taken. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a place is normally valid only for <strong>the</strong><br />

particular academic year (September to August).<br />

Request for deferral <strong>of</strong> a place will not usually<br />

be entertained.<br />

Non-acceptance <strong>of</strong> an applicant may result from<br />

considerations o<strong>the</strong>r than those set out in <strong>the</strong><br />

entry requirements. <strong>The</strong>se considerations include<br />

availability <strong>of</strong> facilities for <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> research<br />

which <strong>the</strong> applicant wishes to pursue or <strong>the</strong><br />

availability <strong>of</strong> faculty personnel to supervise <strong>the</strong><br />

proposed research.<br />
