our BeauTiful loCaTion
The University of the West Indies is the region’s first and top choice for tertiary education. UWI
is a fully autonomous institution serving 14 different countries including: Antigua & Barbuda, the
Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica,
Montserrat, St. Christopher & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago.
The University has four main campuses: Mona, Jamaica; Cave Hill, Barbados; and St. Augustine,
Trinidad and the Open Campus for distance education. The St. Augustine Campus is an attractive
campus situated 15 kilometres (east) of Port of Spain (the nation’s capital), with a distinctive mix
of early 20th century and modern architecture and rich landscape of indigenous and introduced
trees and shrubs.
The Faculties of Science & Agriculture, Engineering, Humanities & Education and Social Sciences are
located on the main campus in St. Augustine, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Mount Hope
in the Medical Sciences Complex. The Medical Sciences Complex is approximately eight kilometres
(west) of the St. Augustine Campus. The St. Augustine area is relatively self-contained, offering
a wide variety of shops, entertainment and recreational activities.
our DiVerSe STuDenT BoDY
The University of the West Indies at the St. Augustine Campus has over 15,000 students, of whom
over 3,000 are postgraduates.
The Campus at St. Augustine has a cosmopolitan student body with representatives not only from
the English-speaking West Indian islands, Guyana, and Belize, but also from North America, Latin
America, Europe, Africa and Asia, including the Far East. This not only makes for an interesting
cultural mix, but provides opportunities for the exchange of ideas and the forging of international
friendships. Mature students and postgraduates (25% of the student body) also contribute to the
enrichment of the intellectual and social life of The University by bringing their own life experiences
to their studies.
