University of Münster– Department of Information Systems – Chair of Computer Science – DBIS Group 30 About the Institution The Chair of Computer Science in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Münster, Germany, is a member of the European Research Center (ERCIS). Gottfried Vossen, Chair of Computer Science, is the European Editor-in- Chief of Information Systems, an international journal. He is also Associate Editor of the International Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems, scientific advisor of Deutsche Informatik-Akademie (DIA, German Informatics Academy), continuouseducation subsidiary of the German Computer Science, university contact person of the German Computer Science Society (GI) as well as speaker of the local GI chapter. Furthermore, he is deputy chairman of the steering committee of the German information technology certification agency Cert-IT, Editor-in-Chief of the dissertation series “Databases and Information Systems” (DISDBIS) of aka Verlag, as well as member of several editorial boards and program committees. Research Topics Our goal is to advance the database field (and its surroundings) so that it becomes an integrated, embedded technology in all aspects of computing and meets the challenges of the IT future (w.r.t. internet, web, mobility, universal storage and access). Current Research Within the project “Single Source,” which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), we cooperate with the Department of Medical Informatics and Biomathematics, Münster. The main goal of the project is to demonstrate how to perform medical Routine Care Documentation and Trial Data Hospital Information System Data Capture Export Monitoring documentation according to the singlesource concept. The single-source concept aims for the integration of data collected for routine patient care on the one hand and for clinical research on the other. In contrast, the current practice of separate documentation workflows for patient care and research in separate information systems causes considerable overhead for data management; in particular, data for clinical research is collected redundantly even if it is readily available within patient care information systems. In view of this redundancy and overhead, the singlesource concept strives for a single point of data entry followed by dual use for patient care and clinical research. Hence, redundant data collection will be avoided, and data-quality improvement processes, which are continuously applied on research data, will help improve data quality for patient care as well.
