Consideration <strong>of</strong>the ethical implications and social responsibilities <strong>of</strong> economic activity andbusiness enterprise is an integral part <strong>of</strong> each major.The curricula in the School <strong>of</strong> Economics and Business Administrationconsist <strong>of</strong> coherent groups <strong>of</strong> classes which seek to balance the need fordeveloping analytical and presentation skills, theory and practice. A majorstrength <strong>of</strong> the school is that many instructors have years <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalexperience in the fields they teach. As a result, the student is introducedto the business fields in a relevant manner. The subject matter withinthe three disciplines is discussed thoroughly and systemically, and ina way that challenges students to approach problems critically and tosolve them efficiently. The curriculum provides the mathematical andinformation-technology skills needed for the advanced courses as wellas for careers and graduate studies. Graduates <strong>of</strong> the school are trainedto assume leadership roles as entrepreneur, manager, financier, teacher,lawyer, investor or researcher. Many graduates go on to graduate studyin business, law or economics.<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>College</strong> confers the degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science oncompletion <strong>of</strong> the general <strong>College</strong> requirements and a major concentrationin one <strong>of</strong> the following areas: accounting, business administration,and economics. A Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree in economics is also <strong>of</strong>fered.An honors concentration in financial services, a marketing concentrationand an international concentration are available to qualified students aspart <strong>of</strong> the business administration curriculum. The school also <strong>of</strong>fersinternship and experimental learning opportunities for students in allmajors. The School <strong>of</strong> Education is dedicated to educatingteachers, counselors, and administrators so that they may anticipateand respond to the diverse needs <strong>of</strong> organizations both public and private.Although the School <strong>of</strong> Education’s primary orientation is toward graduatedegrees and helping students fulfill state <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong> credential and/or licensure requirements, various courses are <strong>of</strong>fered to undergraduatestudents as preliminary preparation for careers related to child developmentand education.Undergraduate ProgramAt the undergraduate level, the School <strong>of</strong> Education <strong>of</strong>fers course workapplicable toward the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong> Elementary and SecondaryTeaching Credentials, the Montessori Early Childhood and ElementaryCertificate Programs and the Child Development Permit (see p. 88).American Montessori Society AffiliatedTeacher training ProgramThe Montessori Teacher Preparation Programs are affiliated with theAmerican Montessori Society (AMS) and accredited by the MontessoriAccreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). The academicphase <strong>of</strong> the Early Childhood Certificate Program may be taken in wholeor in part by undergraduates. This program forms the Liberal and CivicStudies minor called Montessori Thought (p. 88). For those wishing topursue the American Montessori credential, the classes taken in the minorare prerequisites to the paid internship which takes place at the graduatelevel and leads to the awarding <strong>of</strong> international certification. Courses mayapply toward the Montessori elementary or early childhood teachingcredential requirements and Child Development Permit requirements.For further information, consult with a Liberal and Civic Studiesadvisor and/or the coordinator <strong>of</strong> the Montessori Program in theSchool <strong>of</strong> Education.Programs <strong>of</strong> StudyThe School <strong>of</strong> Education <strong>of</strong>fers coursework leading to basic teachingcredentials; specialist and service credentials; Master <strong>of</strong> Arts, Master <strong>of</strong>Education and Doctorate <strong>of</strong> Education degrees; and various teaching,counseling and administrative permits, certificates, and license preparation.Courses are organized into nine main programs <strong>of</strong> study:Crosscultural EducationTeaching English to Speakers <strong>of</strong> Other Languages (TESL)International CertificateMaster <strong>of</strong> Arts Degree — ESL and Early LiteracyMaster <strong>of</strong> Education DegreeEarly Childhood EducationMaster <strong>of</strong> Arts DegreeMaster <strong>of</strong> Education Degree11
