Curriculum Modern Languages198 Language Studies Capstone (.25)An independent project integrating language and culture designed inconsultation with an instructor in a student’s language studies area.The following courses are recommended to majors in Business Administration,Politics, History and Communication:185 Culture and Civilization <strong>of</strong> FranceA study <strong>of</strong> the relationship between the rich culture <strong>of</strong> France and itsturbulent history. Attention given to the interchange betwen artistic orliterary expression and the political process, with consequent socioeconmicdevelopments.186 Culture and Civilization <strong>of</strong> ItalyItalian culture has been central in the development <strong>of</strong> western civilization.From it emerged values and institutions that have helped shapeevery nation adopting that civilization. The aim <strong>of</strong> this course is toconsider the intellectual and artistic manifestations <strong>of</strong> this importantculture in all its brilliant variety.187 Culture and Civilization <strong>of</strong> SpainHighlights <strong>of</strong> Spain’s culture against the backdrop <strong>of</strong> Spanish civilization.Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Spanish artistic expression are studied and the roles <strong>of</strong>social, religious and political values in the development <strong>of</strong> Spains’s cultureand civilization to contemporary times.188 Culture and Civilization <strong>of</strong> Latin AmericaThe study <strong>of</strong> the culture <strong>of</strong> the various Latin American nations frompre-Colombian civilizations to the present. Special consideration <strong>of</strong>manifestations <strong>of</strong> Latin American artistic expression. An examination <strong>of</strong>the social, religious, and political values <strong>of</strong> the culture, and the similaritiesand differences between Latin American nations.189 Culture and Civilization <strong>of</strong> MexicoA study <strong>of</strong> major historical periods, from pre-Colombian times tothe present. Emphasis given to cultural traits particular to Mexico. Anoverview <strong>of</strong> art history: Mesoamerican art, the mural movement andcontemporary currents.SUGGESTED french MAJOR PROGRAMS — OPTION ASUGGESTED french MAJOR PROGRAMS — OPTION BA program <strong>of</strong> study for students who wish to study French but do not plan tocontinue to graduate school (although it does not preclude further study at agraduate level). This option allows for French as a second major.An honors major program for students intending to continue the study<strong>of</strong> French at graduate school level. A GPA <strong>of</strong> at least 3.0 in the major isrequired, as is the recommendation <strong>of</strong> two instructors. SUGGESTED spanish MAJOR PROGRAMS — OPTION ASUGGESTED Spanish MAJOR PROGRAMS — OPTION BA program <strong>of</strong> study for students who wish to study Spanish whether or notthey plan to continue their studies in graduate school. This option allows forSpanish as a second major.This is an honors major program for students intending to continue the study <strong>of</strong>Spanish at graduate school level. The major requires the student to maintaina GPA <strong>of</strong> at least 3.5 in the major and be recommended in writing by twopr<strong>of</strong>essors.
