Curriculum Business AdministrationDOUBLE Concentration IN MARKETINGAND Financial ServicesA double concentration in Marketing and Finance (Financial Services)is <strong>of</strong>fered to all qualified business administration majors. In order tograduate with this double concentration, the student must take all <strong>of</strong> thecourses required in the separate concentrations except for one provision,i.e., the student can take either BusAd 142 (Strategic Marketing Management)or BusAd 100C (the third course in the Senior Honors Forum).Admission into this double concentration program, as is the case for beingadmitted solely into the Honors Concentration Program in Financial Services,requires a major grade point average <strong>of</strong> at least 2.75 in a businessadministration program or special permission <strong>of</strong> the department chair.A minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> at least 2.75 in the major is required to graduatewith the double concentration. Students achieving at least a 3.0 GPAin the major shall receive Department Honors in the Financial Servicescomponent <strong>of</strong> the double concentration. Students should note thatif they do not achieve at least a 2.75 GPA, they should have takenBusAd 132 Operations Management as required for the major inBusiness Administration.Prerequisite GradeAny course listed in this department with a prerequisite assumes a grade<strong>of</strong> C– or better in the prerequisite course.C o u r s e sLower Division20 Introduction to BusinessA general survey and introduction to the functional areas <strong>of</strong> organization,accounting, production, personnel, marketing, and finance. Orientation tobusiness fields, careers, and opportunities. Not open to upper-division majors.40 Business StatisticsIntroduction to statistical concepts used to assist in making decisions underconditions <strong>of</strong> uncertainty. Topics include the collection and analysis <strong>of</strong>data, probability and probability distributions, hypothesis testing, linearregression, and correlation. Not open to freshmen. This course may notbe taken for credit in addition to Mathematics 4 or Psychology 3.Upper DivisionBusAd courses numbered 100 or above are open to juniors andseniors only. BusAd majors who seek to enroll in these courses musthave completed all lower-division BusAd major requirements as wellas any specified upper-division prerequisites. Non-majors shouldconsult the chair.100 A, B, C Senior Honors ForumA yearlong capstone course, principally for the honors concentrationin financial services. The course integrates the major functional areas<strong>of</strong> business viewed in the broader context <strong>of</strong> strategic managementand decision-making from a long-term perspective. The course utilizesthe framework <strong>of</strong> strategic planning and long-term business and socialimplications, focused by in-depth analytical techniques.The course includes direct application <strong>of</strong> the skills and theoriesdeveloped in consulting and/or research assignments. Teams operatein the field with Bay Area business, government, and other institutionsaddressing problem-solving in actual practice with and for “clients.”BusAd 100 A,B,C, to be taken in the senior year, is required forstudents in the honors concentration in financial services and maybe taken by other majors with permission <strong>of</strong> the department chair. Itprovides three upper-division credits in the major and enrollment isrequired in each <strong>of</strong> the senior-year terms (fall, January Term, and spring).The courses must be taken in one academic year, beginning with the fallterm. Prerequisites: BusAd 123, 125, 181 or 182; Economics 106. Allmust be completed prior to beginning BusAd 100 A,B,C or permissionfrom the instructor must be otained.120 Law and BusinessIntroduces students to the history, philosophies, and structure <strong>of</strong> theU.S. legal system, then focuses on the central elements <strong>of</strong> that systemto which they are likely to be exposed during their business careers.Provides them with an understanding <strong>of</strong> contract principles, businesstorts, white-collar crime, business organization structures, and otherrelated topics.121 Advanced Legal Topics in BusinessThis course <strong>of</strong>fers an analysis <strong>of</strong> how business managers can effectivelyoperate their businesses in an environment <strong>of</strong> ever-increasing involvement<strong>of</strong> the legal system in business affairs. Discusses the origins <strong>of</strong> thevarious statutory and regulatory schemes and how they relate to publicpolicy, covering such areas as securities regulation, insider trading, intellectualproperty rights, anti-trust legislation, fair competition practices,environmental protection, trade unions, employment regulations, productsafety and consumer protection. Prerequisite: BusAd 120.70
