Permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor and departmentchair required.Spanish100 Spanish Phonetics and DialectologyStudents will study the sounds, the intonation, and the rhythm <strong>of</strong> spokenSpanish as they explore general principles <strong>of</strong> phonetics and phonology,phonetic transcription, the historical development <strong>of</strong> the Spanish soundsystem, and contrasts between modern peninsular and Latin Americandialects. The course also addresses the problems English-speaking studentsface in their acquisition <strong>of</strong> an acceptable pronunciation <strong>of</strong> Spanish.101 Advanced Spanish Syntax and Composition IThis course serves as a systematic review <strong>of</strong> essential aspects <strong>of</strong> Spanishsyntax with a variety <strong>of</strong> writing exercises using diverse texts as a point <strong>of</strong>departure. Students will analyze samples <strong>of</strong> mass media communicationfor content and style, including newspaper and magazine articles, essaysand editorials, book reviews, film scripts, publicity, and film and theaterreviews. In the second half <strong>of</strong> the term, some emphasis is placed oncreative writing.102 Advanced Writing and ResearchIn this course, students will further develop their Spanish skills in literaryanalysis and academic writing, with the opportunity to research andinvestigate themes related to literature using the library and otherresearch tools. Students will be able to articulate clear theses and be ableto support them through primary and secondary research. Topics to betaught include bibliographies, footnotes, and formatting a project usingthe standard MLA style particular to foreign languages and literatures.103 Advanced Spanish LinguisticsThis course familiarizes students with the scientific study <strong>of</strong> the Spanishlanguage. Areas covered include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax,semantics, sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and the history <strong>of</strong> the Spanishlanguage from its roots in Vulgar Latin to its modern dialectal variations.104 Workshop in TranslationIntroduction to the linguistic and aesthetic problems <strong>of</strong> translation, withemphasis on learning through practice. Focus on various kinds <strong>of</strong> texts,both literary and technical. Equal emphasis given to translating fromSpanish to English and from English to Spanish.106 Advanced Conversation (.25)Conversation on contemporary issues. Golden Age prose and poetry, including Cervantes, Gongora,Lope de Vega and Calderon.Offered in alternate years.121 Spanish Literature: Eighteenth Centuryto the Mid-Twentieth CenturyReadings from the major writers and literary movements in Spain from1700 to 1940. An overview <strong>of</strong> 18th-century ideological renewal asmanifested in essays, the neoclassic theater and social satire. Nineteenthcenturyromanticism in poetry and drama. Realism and naturalism inthe 19th century novel. The Generation <strong>of</strong> 1898. Twentieth-centurymodernism in prose, poetry, and drama.122 Literature <strong>of</strong> the Golden AgeTopics covered include the theater <strong>of</strong> 17th-century dramatists: Lopede Vega, Calderon, Tirso de Molina and others; the poetry <strong>of</strong> Garcilaso,Herrera, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Gongora, Fray Luis de Leon, San Juande la Cruz, Santa Teresa; prose masterpieces such as Cervantes’ DonQuijote and representative selections from his novelas ejemplares.127 Contemporary Peninsular LiteratureStudy <strong>of</strong> major literary trends in poetry, prose, and drama <strong>of</strong> the20th century.
