WQ5 is located in the southern part of the Adirondack. Two different nodal planestrikes are noticeable in the cluster; one with almost N-S orientation and the other withNW-SE. The dip angles in NE-SW direction vary from 22° to 70° and in the NW-SEdirection vary from 44° to 50° (Fig. 5.12c). The P-axes indicate NE-WS orientation inaverage but there are variations in wide angle around it (Fig. 5.12d).Figure 5.13 shows the tectonic setting and geologic features for the Adirondackregion. As discussed above, tectonic activity in this region may be affected by a simplebuttressing effect of weak Palaeozoic rocks against Precambrian shield rocks. Thisbuttressing orientation is consistent with the strike of events in both clusters (WQ4,WQ5) and the pressure direction is similar to the arch axis shown in E-W direction.Therefore the seismicity could be due to reactivation of pre-existing faults (such asancient rifts) (Figures 5.13). The strike of the focal mechanisms of the events in thisregion is mainly in N-S direction, while local faults are mostly in NE-SW direction.82
