'I have this great love of not only themean<strong>in</strong>g of language but of the music of language,' she says. This love goes back to early childhood. 'I have told storiesall my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up <strong>and</strong>, because myfamily always had dogs, <strong>and</strong> I was very good at controll<strong>in</strong>g them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, <strong>and</strong> the teacheralways said "Nonsense, Mollie dear, you will be a writer." So f<strong>in</strong>ally I thought that this woman must have someth<strong>in</strong>g,s<strong>in</strong>ce she was such a good teacher - <strong>and</strong> I decided when I was n<strong>in</strong>e that I would be a writer.'This childhood plan is described <strong>in</strong> her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although is written <strong>in</strong> the third person isclearly autobiographical <strong>and</strong> gives a picture both of Mollie's motivation <strong>and</strong> her struggle towards its achievement.Thoughts of her childhood brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows<strong>and</strong> strawberry fields - sadly now covered with modern houses. 'I was once taken back to see it <strong>and</strong> I felt that somebodyhave la<strong>in</strong> dirty h<strong>and</strong>s all over my childhood. I'll never go back,' she said. 'Never.'To this day, Mollie has a lively friendship to children, which is reflected <strong>in</strong> the love she has for her writ<strong>in</strong>g. 'When wehave visitors with children the adults always say, "If you go to visit Mollie, she'll spend more time for the children."They don‟t underst<strong>and</strong> that children are much more <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g friends. In biology, for<strong>in</strong>stance, discover<strong>in</strong>g the life cycle of a rare species of <strong>in</strong>sect is an example of the work of pure science.Applied science, on the other h<strong>and</strong>, has a different goal even though it uses the same method as pure science. Thegoal of applied science is to apply the laws of pure science to the practical problems of life. An applied scientist is<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> the usefulness of his knowledge. In addition, they are generally strong <strong>and</strong> are not plagued by unusually largenumbers of diseases <strong>and</strong> pests.
