These range from semiconductordevelopment to music technology and from the microscopic to themass-market.Research at DMU is distinctive because DMU applies its research to thebenefit of businesses and communities, delivering tangible improvements tohealthcare, society and individuals’ lives. Our outstanding track record in ‘realworld’ research is one of the core strengths of the university and is testamentto the passion, professionalism, ambition and dedication of researchcolleagues across the institution.The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) rated our research veryhighly, placing us among the likes of Cambridge and Warwick for EnglishLiterature, with 40 per cent of submitted work ranked as 4* or ‘world-leading’(a further 20 per cent was classified as 3* or ‘internationally excellent’).In our Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development, 65 per cent ofresearch was classed as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’, andin Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering 50 per centof our research was rated as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’.Another indication of our research success is the accumulation of researchincome, our project portfolio comprises over £22 million pounds of fundingwhich has come into the university from UK research councils, charities,and organisations such as the National Health Service and the EuropeanUnion in Brussels.As an institution we recognise that research excellence comes fromthe enthusiasm of staff working within our faculties and institutes andthe development of excellent researchers is fundamental to our successinto the future. DMU have developed a number of initiatives to ensurelongevity for our research for the future.DMU is located right in the heart of Leicester, a vibrant multicultural city.We are a community of more than 20,000 students and 2,700 staff.
