Course modulesThe course is delivered by amultidisciplinary team of practicebasedhealthcare professionalsover a period of 11 taught days and90 hours in practice training witha Designated Medical Practitioner(dmP). Centre for PharmacyPostgraduate Education (CPPE)distance learning packs are alsoused as teaching material.The material on the 11 taught daysis delivered mainly during seminars,tutorials and workshops. Some of thesessions are multi-professional.The five credit conversion courserequires attendance at 16 hours ofworkshops and seminars at dmu andtwo days in practice training with theDMP. The taught sessions are mostlyuni-professional, with some multiprofessionalsessions.Teaching and AsseSSmentThe course requires you find a dmPwho will act as your mentor andallow you to observe prescribing intheir practice/team. You will spend90 hours (or 12 full days) workingin practice; this is in addition to thestudy days. The teaching methodsare described under “course modules”above. The taught course contentincludes teaching on prescribing lawand ethics, the psychologyof prescribing, how to deal withconflict, influences on prescribing,consultation skills, basic clinical skills,team working, budget setting andbusiness planning and evidencebasedmedicine.The course assessment is completionof a portfolio of experience, areflective log, and a therapeuticframework in your chosen area. InMarch there is also a two hour writtenexam, one hour osce exam and fiveminute presentation of a treatmentalgorithm, defended during a 15minute viva voce examination. Thesewill take place over two days.ExpertiseThe course is delivered by amultidisciplinary team of staff,including pharmacists, nurses,non-medical prescribers and doctors.The module leader is an independentpharmacist prescriber and manyof the other teaching staff arealso prescribers. The clinical skillssessions are taught by a GP withan additional teaching qualification.Pharmacy has been taught in thefaculty for over 100 years andwe have gained a reputation forproducing high quality graduates.Teaching expertise is of the highestcalibre, and many academics haveexperience in working in the sector.Graduate CareersUpon successful completionof this course you will be awardeda Practice Certificate in IndependentPrescribing, which will allow you toapply to the GPhC for your registerentry to be annotated to that of aprescriber.
