Health and life sciencesRESEARCHthat mattersHealth and Life Sciences has a strong and diverseresearch base, with most academic staff involved in researchor consultancy activity. With 129 dedicated postgraduateresearchers across a number of research themes all focusingon improving healthcare, society and individuals lives.Research groups are locatedwithin the four Schools of AppliedSocial Sciences, Allied HealthSciences, Nursing and Midwiferyand Pharmacy. Many of our researchthemes are multidisciplinary andextend beyond individual Schools,and frequently into other faculties.The School of Applied SocialSciences sees research ofworld-leading and internationallyexcellent quality taking place inthe following areas:Centre for Social ActionThis area undertakes research,training and consultancy in the fieldof public participation in health andsocial care. The key focus is onthe realisation of people’s humanrights as enshrined in the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights. This isachieved through a commitment topartnership working and to the activeinvolvement of people in decisionsconcerning their communities,services and lives. Key areasof our work are:Youth participationPerson-centred servicesPublic and patientinvolvement in researchSocial capital andcommunity cohesionCriminal JusticePolicy and PrACticeStaff with nationally recognisedexpertise in probation, policing,applied criminology and communityand criminal justice, contribute tothis research theme. Research andteaching interests include the work ofthe criminal justice system in generaland more specifically penal policyand practice, especially probationand policing. The group is alsoconcerned with community justice,community engagement in crimeand justice, crime reduction, policeand policing and the contribution ofcriminal justice to public protection.The Division has a high nationalstanding and has developed aninternational profile, with significantresearch work on probation in Europe.Mary SeACole ResearchCentre (MSRC)The msrc provides a basefor ‘diversity-oriented’ research.The Centre works closely withresearchers across the university,and nationally, with an interest inissues of race and ethnicityin health.Particular research concerns includethe delivery of culturally sensitiveand appropriate care in a multi-ethnicsociety, employment opportunitiesand career development of blackand minority ethnic staff, and specificminority ethnic health and socialcare needs.Collaborative working with healthand welfare agencies and communitygroups is a priority, to ensure activedissemination and implementation ofresearch findings in practice and weare active in international networksto promote equality in health and care.164DMU Postgraduate and professional prospectus 2013
