Health and life sciencesRESEARCHthat mattersHealth and Life Sciences has a strong and diverseresearch base, with most academic staff <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> researchor consultancy activity. With 129 dedicated postgraduateresearchers across a number of research <strong>the</strong>mes all focus<strong>in</strong>gon improv<strong>in</strong>g healthcare, society and <strong>in</strong>dividuals lives.Research groups are locatedwith<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four Schools of AppliedSocial Sciences, Allied HealthSciences, Nurs<strong>in</strong>g and Midwiferyand Pharmacy. Many of our research<strong>the</strong>mes are multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary andextend beyond <strong>in</strong>dividual Schools,and frequently <strong>in</strong>to o<strong>the</strong>r faculties.The School of Applied SocialSciences sees research ofworld-lead<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>ternationallyexcellent quality tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g areas:Centre for Social ActionThis area undertakes research,tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and consultancy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fieldof public participation <strong>in</strong> health andsocial care. The key focus is on<strong>the</strong> realisation of people’s humanrights as enshr<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights. This isachieved through a commitment topartnership work<strong>in</strong>g and to <strong>the</strong> active<strong>in</strong>volvement of people <strong>in</strong> decisionsconcern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir communities,services and lives. Key areasof our work are:Youth participationPerson-centred servicesPublic and patient<strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> researchSocial capital andcommunity cohesionCrim<strong>in</strong>al JusticePolicy and PrACticeStaff with nationally recognisedexpertise <strong>in</strong> probation, polic<strong>in</strong>g,applied crim<strong>in</strong>ology and communityand crim<strong>in</strong>al justice, contribute tothis research <strong>the</strong>me. Research andteach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> work of<strong>the</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al justice system <strong>in</strong> generaland more specifically penal policyand practice, especially probationand polic<strong>in</strong>g. The group is alsoconcerned with community justice,community engagement <strong>in</strong> crimeand justice, crime reduction, policeand polic<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> contribution ofcrim<strong>in</strong>al justice to public protection.The Division has a high nationalstand<strong>in</strong>g and has developed an<strong>in</strong>ternational profile, with significantresearch work on probation <strong>in</strong> Europe.Mary SeACole ResearchCentre (MSRC)The msrc provides a basefor ‘diversity-oriented’ research.The Centre works closely withresearchers across <strong>the</strong> university,and nationally, with an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>issues of race and ethnicity<strong>in</strong> health.Particular research concerns <strong>in</strong>clude<strong>the</strong> delivery of culturally sensitiveand appropriate care <strong>in</strong> a multi-ethnicsociety, employment opportunitiesand career development of blackand m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic staff, and specificm<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic health and socialcare needs.Collaborative work<strong>in</strong>g with healthand welfare agencies and communitygroups is a priority, to ensure activedissem<strong>in</strong>ation and implementation ofresearch f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> practice and weare active <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational networksto promote equality <strong>in</strong> health and care.164DMU Postgraduate and professional prospectus 2013
