TECHNOLOGYThe School ofENGINEERING, Mediaand SUSTAINABLE developMENT236From mechanical engineering, nanotechnology through to rapid prototyping, our engineering research groups combine academic and industry expertisewith the latest technologies to continually develop new products, methods andprocesses, aimed at improving industrial techniques and increasing efficiency.Media research groups explore the technical applications of different media. From developing visualisation environments through interactive 3D graphicsto e-learning, we aim to help enterprises succeed in the digital economy bydeveloping innovative products and solutions that enhance people’s livesand surrounding environments. Sustainability research focuses on improvingthe built environment through the application of computer modelling andperformance monitoring, behavioural studies, and the development of energyand environmental policies for a low-carbon future. The Emerging Technologies Research Centre (EMTERC,dmu.ac.uk/EMTERC) focuses on both micro and nanoelectronics. These range from fundamental materialsresearch (fabricating novel materials, understandingbasic physical mechanisms), to investigating deviceapplications in power electronics, plastic electronics, healthcare, renewable energy sources, emerging memorydevices and display technologies. Since its inception in1995, the Centre has actively collaborated with bothacademia and industry at national and internationallevel. Moreover, EMTERC graduates currently hold keyengineering positions in multinational companies such asIntel, International Rectifier, Cypress, IXYS, Silvaco, andCadence, whilst some work for universities in the uk,Germany and Japan. The Centre for Electronic and CommunicationsEngineering (CECE, dmu.ac.uk/CECE) spans a widerange of diverse areas from semiconductor physics, signal processing to communications systems. The keyresearch themes cover: electronics (which includeselectromagnetics, microwave engineering embeddedsystems, power electronics and signal processing),semiconductor devices and materials (including researchinto thermal imaging of semiconductor devices), andcommunication systems (particularly communicationsinfrastructure and broadcast technology). The Centreaims to deliver pure and applied research to satisfy bothfundamental research and industry specific (to marketready) knowledge transfer. Electronic engineering gainedan excellent result in the raE 2008. This success hasled to expansion of the research base, building on thesethemes and the inception of the IET accredited mscElectronic Engineering. The Centre for Engineering Science and AdvancedSystems (CEsas, dmu.ac.uk/CESAS) comprises twokey themes: water software systems and mechanicalengineering. Both areas cover a number of researchactivities in advanced mathematical modelling, scientificcomputing and experimental technologies aimed atdevelopment and investigation of complex engineeringsystems. Water software systems cover research areasof water distribution systems and wastewater treatmentplants. Capabilities in wastewater treatment include:dynamic modelling and design of wastewater treatmentplants, feasibility studies, optioneering, plant operationoptimisation and control. Mechanical engineering conductsresearch in a number of areas within the mechanical andaeronautical engineering sectors. Current applicationareas include flight dynamics and piloted simulation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for optimizationof combustion processes, surface engineering forinnovative materials and phenomenological modellingof aircraft aerodynamics. The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development(IEsd, dmu.ac.uk/IESD) has undertaken research andconsultancy for many years to create the underlyingknowledge and technologies necessary to achieve moreDMU pOstgraduate and professional prospECTus 2013
