The course begins by establishingfundamental knowledge of waterand air quality and the associatedtechniques of pollution control. Itcontinues by providing fundamentalknowledge of waste managementand associated techniques, andconcludes with integrated pollutionprevention control and investigatinghow the three major pollution areasaffect each other.This course focuses on UK andEuropean legislation and techniquessuitable for a temperate climate.Four core modules are studied, eachone is worth 30 credits. These are:Integrated Pollution Preventionand Control (IPPC) providesan understanding of the origin,structure and direction of UK andEU legislation and policy. Themodule also covers the principalexisting UK and eu legislationand policy in the context of:discharges to water; emissionsto the atmosphere; managementof waste; planning; noise; andhealth and safetyWaste offers an extensiveoverview of waste managementpractice and policy. It includesan in-depth study of currentwaste legislation, its origins anddevelopment, waste managementstrategies, and the various wastetreatment disposal and recoveryoptions that are available. Themodule focuses on the cradleto the grave approach to wastemanagement and the use ofthe waste hierarchy to minimisewaste productionAir provides a comprehensiveoverview of air pollution in anurban and industrial environment.You will gain an understandingof the origins of pollutants, theirinteractions in the atmosphere,and the techniques availablefor measuring, monitoring andcontrolling them. The modulealso covers the legislation andpolicies aimed at reducingemissions and improvingair qualityWater familiarises you with thecomplete cycle of water use,from the abstraction of waterand the management of waterresources, the methods of watertreatment and supply, through tothe treatment of wastewater andthe disposal of sewage sludge.It also comprehensively coversthe legislation and policiesrelating to the water industryThe course concludes with a project(60 credits), which is an opportunityto engage in a critical reflectionon an area of policy or practice.Recent topics include; compliancewith environmental legislation whenworking in and around water coursesduring utility industry construction,installing a grey water recyclingsystem, an investigation into theimpact of new statistical guidancefor contaminated land assessment,and a framework for modernisinglegislation affecting wastemanagement on the Isle of Man.Teaching and ASSeSSmentYou are encouraged to attend aninduction session at the start ofthe course – these days allow youto meet key members of staff andfamiliarise yourself with studyingby distance learning. The courseoperates on a rolling, modular basisand you join when a new modulecommences. The majority of thecourse material is delivered viadistance learning modules.Each module is based on a 15 weekstudy timetable, although you canextend the study block to allowflexibility within a fixed framework.You are actively encouraged toattend day tutorials for the Air,Water, Waste and IPPC modules.The course is assessed throughthe completion of post-tests andassignments at the end of eachmodule.
