Itcont<strong>in</strong>ues by provid<strong>in</strong>g fundamentalknowledge of waste managementand associated techniques, andconcludes with <strong>in</strong>tegrated pollutionprevention control and <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>ghow <strong>the</strong> three major pollution areasaffect each o<strong>the</strong>r.This course focuses on <strong>UK</strong> andEuropean legislation and techniquessuitable for a temperate climate.Four core modules are studied, eachone is worth 30 credits. These are:Integrated Pollution Preventionand Control (IPPC) providesan understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>,structure and direction of <strong>UK</strong> andEU legislation and policy. Themodule also covers <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipalexist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>UK</strong> and eu legislationand policy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of:discharges to water; emissionsto <strong>the</strong> atmosphere; managementof waste; plann<strong>in</strong>g; noise; andhealth and safetyWaste offers an extensiveoverview of waste managementpractice and policy. It <strong>in</strong>cludesan <strong>in</strong>-depth study of currentwaste legislation, its orig<strong>in</strong>s anddevelopment, waste managementstrategies, and <strong>the</strong> various wastetreatment disposal and recoveryoptions that are available. Themodule focuses on <strong>the</strong> cradleto <strong>the</strong> grave approach to wastemanagement and <strong>the</strong> use of<strong>the</strong> waste hierarchy to m<strong>in</strong>imisewaste productionAir provides a comprehensiveoverview of air pollution <strong>in</strong> anurban and <strong>in</strong>dustrial environment.You will ga<strong>in</strong> an understand<strong>in</strong>gof <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s of pollutants, <strong>the</strong>ir<strong>in</strong>teractions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> atmosphere,and <strong>the</strong> techniques availablefor measur<strong>in</strong>g, monitor<strong>in</strong>g andcontroll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m.
