Interestingly, no difference w<strong>as</strong> observed in <strong>the</strong> in vivo t<strong>as</strong>te scores <strong>for</strong> both polymers at <strong>the</strong>same PMOL loadings. For example at 40% PMOL loading <strong>the</strong> average panellists‘ score w<strong>as</strong>identical <strong>for</strong> EPO and VA64 extrudates respectively.Fig. 4.3: Schematic representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> t<strong>as</strong>te scores <strong>of</strong> pure API, bulk polymers and <strong>the</strong>extruded <strong>for</strong>mulations.A <strong>novel</strong> in vitro approach to evaluate <strong>the</strong> t<strong>as</strong>te m<strong>as</strong>king efficiency <strong>of</strong> variouspharmaceutical dosage <strong>for</strong>ms and avoid problems related to human panelists is <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong>electronic sensor arrays [39-42] known <strong>as</strong> electronic tongues (e – tongue). Similar studies wereper<strong>for</strong>med by o<strong>the</strong>r researchers where a principal component analysis (PCA) <strong>of</strong> active<strong>for</strong>mulations against <strong>the</strong> placebo w<strong>as</strong> presented through PCA maps in order to determine <strong>the</strong>t<strong>as</strong>te m<strong>as</strong>king potency <strong>of</strong> various components [43-45] . For <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study purePMOL, bulk polymers and extruded granules were processed <strong>as</strong> described in <strong>the</strong> previoussection. The signal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different <strong>for</strong>mulations w<strong>as</strong> represented on t<strong>as</strong>te maps b<strong>as</strong>ed on aprojection obtained by PCA <strong>as</strong> depicted in Fig. 4.4a- b. These maps showed <strong>the</strong> relativerepartition and proximity <strong>of</strong> bitterness <strong>for</strong> each <strong>for</strong>mulation.75 | P a g e
