However, in our case we observed slightly lower hardness valuethan expected but the all tablets still seemed to be very robust as the weight loss percentageafter 10 min in friability test was only 0.01. This could be due to the presence of elasticpolymers (Eudragit ESPO) in the final tablet composission. The composition of thematrix core of the final tablet formulation included a combination of hydrophilic (HPMC)and lactose along with extruded ethylcellulose to control HCS release patterns. Thecombination of all three ingredients provided retarded release profiles of HCS at higher pHvalues when the dissolution of the coating layer occurred [25] . The release profile was alsocontrolled from the polymer amount coated on the surface of the matrix tablet.161 | P a g e

(n = 3).The release mechanism from the tablets can be described as a diffusion process of thedrug through the slow release polymers matrix. The slow dissolving nature of EC polymershinders the dissolution medium penetration and consequently controls the drug dissolutionand diffusion rate [25] . While processing through HME the active substance was covered byEC matrix which resulted in retarded release of HCS over 12 hrs. Moreover, the polymericcoating level indicated a controlling effect due to its slow dissolution, irrespective of thetablet composition. Lower coating levels (15%) allowed greater penetration of the dissolutionmedium.3.7 Analysis of release mechanismAnalysis was performed by the above equations using water as the dissolution testmedium. Obtained results for release rate constants as well as R 2 values for all tablets aresummerized in table 8.3. Neither coated nor uncoated tablets fit with equation (8.1), zeroorder release model, which represents zero order kinetics. Concerning equations (8.2)–(8.6),regression analyses were performed in the ranges in which linearity was observed.
