Be Not Afraid ResurrectionIt was hard to talk about dying, but every now andthen we did. I told her we could no more imagine thelife beyond the grave than a blind man could imaginecolors. But we also talked about faith, and how, becauseour knowledge was like a bridge which comes to an end,so that it does not reach the other shore, we must pray,“I believe, O God. Help thou my unbelief.” A wonderfulprayer, that. And we must remember that for the faithful, dyingdoes not mean that life is taken away, but that it ischanged. For when our dwelling here is taken away, aneverlasting home still awaits us in heaven. In a way, it requires no great leap of faith to believein the transformation Day speaks of. It may bemiraculous, but it can still be seen all around us daily,in nature – in the emergence of a butterfly from whatwas once a caterpillar, or a sprout from what was once arotting seed. As for the mysteries of the hereafter, theyare not entirely closed to us either. Having witnessedthe final moments of many dying people, I have sensedthe nearness of another place – call it eternity, heaven, the kingdom of God, or whatever – and according tohospice workers and others quoted in the book FinalGifts, this is a common experience among those whoprovide end-of-life care.01
