CHAPTER X10.1 Tapi River SystemWater Quality of Rivers in Tapi BasinThe Tapi basin extends over an area of 65,145 sq km. Situated in the Deccanplateau, the basin covers large areas in the States of Madhya Pradesh,Maharashtra and Gujarat. The Tapi basin is bounded on the north by the Satpurarange, on the east by the Mahadeo hills, on the south by the Ajanta range andSatmala hills and on the west by the Arabian Sea. The total length of the riverfrom the head to its outfall into the sea is 724 km of which 228 km is in MadhyaPradesh. 228 km in Maharashtra, 214 km in Gujarat and the remaining 54 kmfrom the common boundary between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.The Tapi receives several tributaries on both its banks. The Bhokar, the Suki, theMor, the Harki, the Guli, the Aner, the Arunavati, the Gomai, the Gomati and theValer join it from the right and the Puma, the Bhogvati, the Vaghur, the Girna, theBori, the Panjhra, the Amarvati, the Shiva, the Rengavati and the Nesu join fromthe left. The river basin is moderately rain fed and flows through intensivelyfarmed black cotton-soil area.The urban population has been observed to be higher in the tail reaches of theriver compared to the Upper reaches of the basin, although the proportion of thegeographical areas covered to these two reaches are in reverse order. The mostpopulous town in Tapi basin is Surat followed by Amravati and Dhule inMaharashtra.Major part of the upper Tapi basin is predominantly agricultural but in the lowerbasin area industrialisation has fairly developed in M.P. the industries are centredonly in one district-East Nimar (Khandwa) while in Maharashtra Jalgaon is themost industrialised area.Distillery units contribute the largest share inMaharashtra where as textile occupies the predominant activity in Gujaratfollowed by food & beverages and chemical industries.The Tapi receives several tributaries on both its banks.
