Moved to <strong>Raleigh</strong> to work with Willie Yorkon Cameron Village <strong>in</strong> 1946. Worked <strong>in</strong> <strong>Raleigh</strong> as Leif Valand and Assoc. until hisretirement <strong>in</strong> the 1970s. In the late 1960s Valand took Nelson Benz<strong>in</strong>g as his partner. All<strong>of</strong> Valand’s bluepr<strong>in</strong>ts were lost by his former partner after his retirement. Valand’s firmpromoted a “modern yet practical architectural expression” <strong>in</strong> dozens <strong>of</strong> significant<strong>Raleigh</strong> projects, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g shopp<strong>in</strong>g centers, schools, churches, hotels, country clubs,apartments, <strong>of</strong>fice build<strong>in</strong>gs, government build<strong>in</strong>gs, and custom s<strong>in</strong>gle-family homes.Unlike such purist architects as Milton Small, Valand’s firm evolved <strong>in</strong>to a “developerdrivenservice firm,” <strong>in</strong> the words <strong>of</strong> his son Mark Valand.
