<strong>The</strong> <strong>Development</strong> <strong>of</strong> Modern Architecture <strong>in</strong> <strong>Raleigh</strong> <strong>1945</strong>-<strong>1965</strong> 50Edward (Terry) Waugh (1913-1966) was a South African, the son <strong>of</strong> an architect, whowas tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> architecture <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, Scotland. Waugh worked <strong>in</strong> California, studiedand worked <strong>in</strong> architecture and city plann<strong>in</strong>g with Eliel Saar<strong>in</strong>en <strong>in</strong> the mid-1940s, taught<strong>in</strong> the architecture school at the University <strong>of</strong> Kansas, and from 1948 to his death taught<strong>in</strong>termittently at the School <strong>of</strong> Design at North Carol<strong>in</strong>a State College. His best knownbuild<strong>in</strong>gs are Harrelson Hall, a round classroom build<strong>in</strong>g at State College, LJVMColiseum <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>ston Salem, and the expansion <strong>of</strong> the Universidad Agraria campus nearLima, Peru. Public schools and residences were an important aspect <strong>of</strong> his practice.Harrelson Hall, N. C.
