1.1 Snapshots architectureBefore we begin discussing snapshots we provide a short review of XIV’s architecture. Formore information refer to IBM XIV Storage System: Architecture, Implementation, and Usage,SG24-7659.The XIV system consists of several servers with 12 disk drives each and memory that acts ascache. When a logical volume or LUN is created on an XIV system, the volume’s data is divided intopieces 1 MB in size, called partitions. Each partition is duplicated for data protection andstored on disks of different modules.
