►For exchange data, the Microsoft Exchange Server contains the writer components andrequires no configuration. For SQL data, Microsoft SQL Server contains the writer components (SqlServerWriter). Itis installed with the SQL Server software and requires the following minor configurationtasks:– Set the SqlServerWriter service to automatic. This enables the service to startautomatically when the machine is rebooted.– Start the SqlServerWriter service.ProviderThis is the application that produces the shadow copy and also manages its availability. Itcan be a system provider (such as the one included with the Microsoft Windows operatingsystem), a software provider, or a hardware provider (such as the one available with theXIV storage system). For XIV, you must install and configure the IBM XIV VSS Provider.VSS uses the following terminology to characterize the nature of volumes participating in ashadow copy operation:► PersistentThis is a shadow copy that remains after the backup application completes its operations. This type of shadow copy also survives system reboots.► Non-persistentThis is a temporary shadow copy that remains only as long as the backup applicationneeds it in order to copy the data to its backup repository.► TransportableThis is a shadow copy volume that is accessible from a secondary host so that the backupcan be off-loaded. Transportable is a feature of hardware snapshot providers. On an XIVyou can mount a snapshot volume to another host.► Source volumeThis is the volume that contains the data to be shadow copied. These volumes contain theapplication data.► Target or snapshot volumeThis is the volume that retains the shadow-copied storage files. It is an exact copy of thesource volume at the time of backup.VSS supports the following shadow copy methods:► Clone (full copy/split mirror)A clone is a shadow copy volume that is a full copy of the original data as it resides on avolume. The source volume continues to take application changes while the shadow copyvolume remains an exact read-only copy of the original data at the point-in-time that it wascreated.► Copy-on-write (differential copy)A copy-on-write shadow copy volume is a differential copy (rather than a full copy) of theoriginal data as it resides on a volume. This method makes a copy of the original databefore it is overwritten with new changes. Using the modified blocks and the unchangedblocks in the original volume, a shadow copy can be logically constructed that representsthe shadow copy at the point-in-time at which it was created.46 IBM XIV Storage System: Copy Services and Migration
