4Chapter 4.Remote MirroringThe Remote Mirroring function of the XIV Storage System provides a real-time copy betweentwo or more storage systems supported over Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI links. This featureprovides a method to protect data from site failures.Remote Mirroring can be a synchronous copy solution where write operations are completedon both copies (local and remote sites) before they are considered to be complete (seeChapter 5, “Synchronous Remote Mirroring” on page 125). This type of remote mirroring isnormally used for short distances to minimize the effect of I/O delays inherent to the distanceto the remote site.Remote Mirroring can also be an asynchronous solution were consistent sets of data arecopied to the remote location at specified intervals and host I/O operations are complete afterwriting to the primary (see Chapter 6, “Asynchronous Remote Mirroring” on page 149). Thisis typically used for long distances between sites.Note: For asynchronous mirroring over iSCSI links, a reliable, dedicated network must beavailable. It requires consistent network bandwidth and a non-shared link.Unless otherwise noted, this chapter describes the basic concepts, functions, and terms thatare common to both XIV synchronous and asynchronous mirroring.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2010.
