Kunene - Dean of Student AffairsVISIONThe vision of the Department of Student Affairs is to provideexcellence in administrative leadership and counsellingservices to students; and the promotion of educational andadministrative support to all structures of the University.MISSIONThe Department endeavours to provide leadership, social,extra-curricular and academic counselling services toall students. It seeks to challenge students to becomeresponsible and productive citizens of the country; andsupport the University’s educational and administrativegoals.OBJECTIVESThe main objective of the Department is to provideprofessional and student-oriented services designed toenrich students’ holistic development.COUNSELLING AND DEVELOPMENT SERVICESIntroductionThe University has continued to provide counselling anddevelopment services to all students. The basic servicesprovided by the counselling unit included individual andgroup counselling and psychotherapy, career guidance,student development, training, research, coordination andadvocacy, school liaison and community outreach.KWALUSENIDuring the year under review, the Counselling Careerand Development Unit (CCDU) provided the followingservices:Development programmes to resident studentswere availed. In conjunction with Peer Counsellors,Educators and social partners it facilitated a sessionfor all first year students at the Campus. With the samegroup the Department facilitated the launch of theAnnual ‘16 days’ of Activism Against Gender-BasedViolence especially directed at women;Hosted the pyjama night for women students tocommemorate the Annual Women’s Day;Mobilised for Voluntary and Counselling and Testingservices, Male Circumcision campaign, and facilitatedthe Commemoration of the World AIDS Day.The Unit also coordinated the annual orientation sessionfor full-time students. In collaboration with the Facultyof Commerce, CCDU held the Career Indaba and CareerSeminar in both semesters. The Office also houses theTertiary Initiatives Desk, an assistantship award in thethree campuses which is sponsored by Prof. Lynne Lackeyof Johns Hopkins University, USA. One former student wasattached to the Unit for nine weeks. It also facilitated logisticsmeetings with a view to pilot the mentorship programmefor the first year students; and also worked on logistics toestablish a Volunteer Programme in collaboration withthe UNISWA Foundation. The programme would be fullyoperational in the academic year 2012/13. The Office alsoproduced Behaviour Change Communication materials forboth students and staff.The CCDU held career guidance sessions for close to10, 000 students in the different schools of the country.23REPORT OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR
