SWAZILAND INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE,MEDICINAL AND INDIGENOUS FOOD PLANTS (SIRMIP)Professor P.S. Dlamini - DirectorVISIONLeadership through excellence in research on traditionalmedicine, medicinal and indigenous food plants.MISSIONThe Institute seeks to serve as Swaziland’s leadinginstitution for the design, coordination and executionof multidisciplinary research in traditional medicine,medicinal and indigenous wild edible plants. It strivesto combine the expertise of scientists and TraditionalMedical Practitioners (TMPs), with a view to producingplant-derived pharmaceuticals and to promote the use oftraditional medicine in national health care. It also seeks toraise general awareness regarding the nutritional value ofunderutilized indigenous wild edible plants.OBJECTIVESThe objectives of the Institute are to:Promote ethnobotanical surveys for indigenous noncultivatedfruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants inorder to establish and maintain a database;Document available Bio-resources and their technologicalexploitation;Provide a forum for the meeting of researcherson medicinal and food plants with nutritionistsand traditional medical practitioners TMPs in anatmosphere of mutual trust and respect;Collect seeds of under-utilised indigenous fruits andvegetables to form a gene bank which could be used tobroaden the food base;Propagate food and medicinal plants in order toconserve biological diversity;Bioassay medicinal and indigenous food plants;Isolate and identify bioactive compounds from plants;Develop isolated compounds into new drugs for thetreatment of common diseases;Organise workshops and seminars;Set up a staff profile whose expertise will reflect manyscientific disciplines such as Botany, Microbiology,Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Nutrition,Agronomy, Medicine, Information Technology and theSocial Sciences;Work towards making traditional medicine a safe andacceptable alternative system of health care; andEnsure that the research conducted in the Institutecontributes towards food security and improvedhealthcare for the Swazi nation and beyond, thus leadingto economic developmentEXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe Swaziland Institute for Research in TraditionalMedicine, Medicinal and Indigenous Food Plants(SIRMIP) is Swaziland’s leading Institute that conductsmultidisciplinary research on medicinal and indigenouswild edible plants by combining the expertise of scientistsand Traditional Health Practitioners. While the Institutestrives to execute its functions as contained in the UniversityStrategic Plan, the current financial crisis faced by theUniversity and the country at large has led to the declinein the budgetary allocations, thus affecting the operationsof the Institute. Nonetheless, the Institute has managed toachieve some of its objectives with the limited budget andpartly through links and funding from some of its externalpartners.One of the targets of the Institute is to have its own physicalinfrastructure which would enable it to carry out its mainfunctions effectively and more efficiently.
