FACULTY OF SCIENCE - continuedResearch in progressThree of the four on-going research projects have beenclassified under three areas in line with the FacultyThemes submitted to the Research Centre. The first studyis on Indigenous Medicinal and Nutritious Food Plants;it addresses Theme 5 and is funded for E55, 569.00. Thesecond is on Water Quality Management, it addressesTheme 3 and is funded for E29, 773.60. The third is onEnvironmental Conservation, it addresses Them 1 and isfunded for E59, 000. The last one is on Solid State Physics.PUBLICATIONSInternational JournalsPapers published in international journals have beenclassified under the three areas. Five were on MathematicalModelling of Fluid, heat and mass transfer, two on FoodSecurity and the last two on Solid State Physics.WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARSNational workshops and/or seminars:Five papers presented in national workshops and/orseminars have been classified under the four areas: FoodSecurity, Mathematical Modelling of fluid, heat and masstransfer, Swaziland National Chemical Profile, and Science,Technology and Innovation.International workshops and/or seminars:Fifteen papers were presented at various internationalworkshops, seminars and/or conferences have beenclassified under the seven areas: Small mammals (Rodentsand Bats), Food Security and HIV/AIDS, Treatment ofTuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, Rain Water Harvesting,Mathematical Modelling of Fluid, heat and masstransfer, and Science, Technology and Innovation PolicyDevelopment.LINKS/COLLABORATION WITH OTHERINSTITUTIONS/ORGANISATIONSBiological SciencesIn August 2011 the Biological Sciences Departmentformalized a Memorandum of Understanding with theUniversity of Greenwich’s Natural Resources Institute. ThisMOU partners the two institutions in sourcing funding forresearch projects and in the execution of research.Geography, Environmental Science & Planning (GEP)The Department of GEP has a link with Queen’sUniversity, in Canada on Urban Food Security. Thecollaboration has made possible funding for research,conferences and training and capacity building such aswith research projects with both undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition, the department has alsofacilitated capacity building of staff from the Manzinimunicipality. The department is now a member of theAfrican Food Security Urban Network.The department has been invited to be part of a PanAfrican project on sustainable development. Theinvitation was due to the Department’s work on theUrban Food Security Project. The project is on “ThePromotion of Sustainable Development by HigherEducation Institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.”The second phase of the project aims to develop aHandbook from research. The project is supported bythe Global University Network for Innovation (GUNi);International Association of Universities and theAssociation of African Universities (AAU). Financialsupport is through contributions from the SpanishAgency on International Cooperation for Developmentand the Swedish International Development Agency(SIDA).CONSULTANCYOne lecturer is involved in a consultancy project forthe United Nations Environmental Programme on“Development of a Strategy for the Coordination of theImplementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements.”The project is conducted through the AfricanUnion Commission, and is funded by the European Union.AWARDS, REGOGNITIONS & HONOURSThe following recognition, awards and honours werereceived by staff members in the Department of GEP.Geography, Environmental Science & Planning (GEP)Full Academic Scholarship Award by Bill & MelindaGates Foundation (2012). Bill and Melinda GatesFoundation organized a meeting together with theproject leaders for an Integrated Monitoring System forAgriculture, Ecosystem Services and Human Well-being todiscuss implementation of the Monitoring System. Around3000 global sustainability experts from science, policy,and business lead a comprehensive and interdisciplinaryprogramme on the state of the planet and discuss solutionsat all scales to move societies on to a sustainable pathway.REPORT OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR 54
